Travelling to Rome with Miss Gunner for Paddys weekend

Looking at central hotels and was recommended the Hotel Hiberia which is working out at €126 per night. Checked a few more and all seem to be this price

Can anyone recommend a hotel that is central. Also pubs to visit for Paddys Day

Still looking found a hotel called Hotel Napoleon Got good reviews but near Termini so is the area that bad around there ? Anyone ever stay here or get any other recommendations ?

Also still looking at irish pubs to celebrate Paddys Day found The Fiddlers elbow

    Any others ?

Stay away from Termini, main rail stations and their environs are dodgy in any language.I looked up the Napoleon, it's a bit removed from where you'd like to be if you want to catch the sites The best located hotel, in my opinion, is the Hotel Della Torre Argentina, bang in the middle of everything. It can be dear but they do specials so you may be lucky. The rooms aren't huge but the location is unbeatable.Just did a quick look at Argentinas site, would only be marginally more expensive than the Napoleon but well worth it imo. Ask for a room at the back,a little busy outside. Fiddlers is a good spot, it is small though. There are a number of hotels near Fiddlers on Via Cavour, location is pretty good.

Thanks the Hotel Della Torre Argentina is bit more expensive but mailed them to see if they have any offers. The Hotel Napoleon is a bit out but its near an underground stop. Most central hotels are mad expensive. Just wanted to know if the area where the Napoleon is safe enough

If anyone has any other suggestions would welcome them

These hotels have very affordable rooms!
The hotel 53 is located just south of Villa Borghese, the prices are very interesting and the hotel is about 5 minutes from piazza di spagna and Trevi fountain.
It has very good reviews on TA!
Also the hotel Residenza Farnese has a very convenient location, on piazza Navona close to the Tevere. The latter is more expensive and both hotels have terraces!
Here are the TA reviews for the hotel. They are also very good!

I can recommend the Diocleziano, it's beside Termini but we didn't find that to be a problem. The place is a hive of activity and was dead handy when having to get a bus to/from anywhere.

My partner and I stayed in Hotel Rex last October for a few nights, got it for €140 room per night, excellent location, near Termini but far away enough from it if you know what I mean! The hop on off bus tour was only up the street, an Irish bar around the corner, near good and reasonable restaurants, oh and the buffet breakfast at the hotel was excellent, loads of choice.

Look for a hotel in Repubblica. This will be within 10 mins walk of Termini, and close to the archaeological areas and shopping streets.

Termini is not a bad area, or dangerous area. It is a big train station with subway hub and a bus depot. There will be a lot of people around, mostly tourists. Naturally, as with any other busy location, you may encounter beggars, and should take care of pickpockets - just like at Connolly station in Dublin, or on the Luas. At night you may see some prostitutes, but so what?

Rome has a low serious crime rate compared with other cities of similar size, but a high rate of petty crime such as pickpocketing. I have been a frequent visitor to Rome and the only crime I have seen is in the train station - "helpers" at the self service machines. Just say "NO" or walk away.

Bettoja Hotel Nord Nuova RomaThis hotel has a rooftop bar - though it may not be open in March. There are several nice restaurants nearby, and two Irish pubs. Expect to pay c€300 for two nights

Some of the hotel is a bit old, while other parts have been refurbished. On my stay before last the room was clean but worn looking, my last stay the room was clean and recently refurbished, very big. But it's just a place for sleeping, you'll be out all the time.

Noisy location. Subway entrance is actually outside the hotel door. Small park across the road often has an open air cinema. On the plus side, one of the best ice-cream shops in the world (G Fassi) is just up the road.

Looks good but getting mixed reviews on trip advisor. What are the rooms like are they decent enough although dont plan to spend time in it. Do they have wifi ? May give them a ring as all hotels either booked out or mad expensive As long as its clean thats all that matters to Miss Gunner

Bar in the hotel? Because there are a bunch of good bars in the center, close to Trevi there's L'Antica Birreria Peroni and Trinity College Irish pub ;) .
Also close to Navona piazza you have a bunch of them, and the best rated are Cuccagna Pub, Open Baladin Roma and Irish Pub Abbey Theater Rome.
    Hope this helps!

Bar not essential just if wanted to have night cap or start up before heading out.Just want to know about hotel rex that they dont tell you on website

What would be the best Irish pub for paddys or just do a pub crawl? What time do pubs open at?

It's not truly the equivalent of a 4 star as we'd know it here but the room and ensuite were a good size, very clean, we had no prob with the air con, or showers or anything. Mind you we didn't spend a whole lot of time there except to sleep mainly. The staff are excellent - very informative and helpful. There is a bar beside reception but it doesn't seem to get used much.
If I were going back to Rome I'd definitely stay there again for the location, price and breakfast. Can't say any better than that.

oh and if you check it out on booking.com you'll get more reviews. We booked it from there.

I'm not sure about the rex, have you read the TA reviews and looked on booking.com?

Also bars usually open around noon for lunch and stay open until 2 or 3am.

I like the hotel Beldes, in Prati area, it's rather central. There is a nice pub close near the hotel, called Vaccaniro bar!
You can hotel try the hotel Nizza, right next to the Terminii station (if you go there by train it could be convenient..). Di savorio is a nice barrestaurant, a few steps from the hotel, great ambiance!

One id recommend is the Hotel Mecenete Palace. Its near Termini but facing the Basilica de Santa Maria Maggiore. It has a rooftop bar.again though I dont think it opens in March (when I was there). Very romantic spot though at that time of year.

Hotel Rex looking ok so far. Ok its not the lap of Luxury but I don't intend spending much time there. Others suggested either booked out or more expensive

    Keep Suggestions coming thanks

That was exactly my thought on our stay there!

If you are booking Hotel Rex there is a 10% discount available with Hotels.com. Just use the code HCJD6HT when booking. For example, 18th and 19th March come to €282.61. January 30th is the last day for using the above discount code for travel until June 30, 2011.

Of course, you may already have found better value elsewhere!

    Hotel Traiano, Via 4 Novembre.
Very close to Il Vittoriano and Colosseum.
Small, ok breakfast but the location was amazing :) You could see the Roman Forum from the bedroom window. Quiet outside at night.
    (Irish bar around the corner)

Irish Gunner, there's a restaurant when you go out the front door of the Rex turn left and at the top of the street go right called Galliano Blanca, it was reccomended to us by the hotel. it was quite ok - Pizzas were delish, Service was adeqaute!

Next door to there you have La Taveleone which was ok too. The waiter was very friendly.

On our 3rd night we ate in Tudini Gabriele & Tomoko on Via Principe Amadeo which we found to be very good.

Location is great. You'll walk from Termini in 5 minutes. If you turn left out of the hotel you can see S Maria Maggiore, big church - walk up there keeping to the left of it and there is a supermarket called UPIM. Along there are also many bus tour operators offices.

Me and the missus going to Rome next weekend. Somebody here on boards recommended Blue Hostel near the main train station. It is supposedly a 'boutique' hostel so not your usual hostel style? It has good reviews on tripadvisor and I managed to haggle them down to €90 a night for a double room so can't complain really. I'll report back on whether its any good or not?

Flan O Briens is a good Irish pub. They serve food to. Its on Via National. I usually stay close to Termini when i go to Rome. Republicia Square is about 5 mins from Termini Station and Flan OBriens is another 5 mins. There is a good tube system that will take you right into the center for the sight seeing and if you fancy it its about 50 mins walk i think. Google maps will tell you how far it is.

Speaking of Irish pubs would Flan O Briens be the best place to watch the Ireland V France game on Sunday? Need somewhere close to Termini to watch the game because we'll be going straight to the airport to catch our flight home once its over

Hotel Abruzzi is a popular hotel right in the very center of Rome, at the Pantheon. The hotel rates very well on Trip Advisor. It is 3-star and very reasonably priced. Of course price depends on the season.
