EMLA Cream over the counter?

Can I get Emla cream over the counter? or if not, can I get something similar? (not looking for names as I appreciate the charter rules)

My son is getting the swine flu vaccination on Thursday.

Among other medical conditions he has Aspergers and gets quite anxious (and has a low pain threshold). He told me that he will only take the vaccine if he has the Emla cream (he had one dose last year without the cream and the second with the cream. There was a noticeable difference in scream decible level)

I've no problem asking the doc for a script if necessary but it would be easier if I could get it OTC.

    Thanks.

I have a feeling it is on this side of the world, it's script only in the States. Hopefully someone else will verify.

From looking at the Irish Medicines Board's website, it appears to be on prescription.

Thank you everyone - I appreciate your help.

Heading off to a meeting in a min but will speak to the GP's receptionist and our local pharmacist afterwards.

Will let you know how we get on.

Useful link, had been on their site before but completely missed the link on the front page.

    Thank you all again.

    Yes it is script only.

I was given enough by someone to do his arm in the morning.

Hopefully no tears or roars tomorrow. ;)

Local pharmacist might give it to you and apply it for him w/o prescription depending on your relationship with him/her.

Yeah, it's a very handy site, it's supposed to have all medicinal products licensed in Ireland listed on it, gives information about OTC or prescription only status and has patient information leaflets or summary of product characteristics for most of them.
