Connecting a Laptop drive to a USB

I am trying to connect a hard drive from an old dell laprop to my USB to recover the data from it.

I bought this in Malpin today...

    http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=35057

I thought it would be straight forward enough. However, although the connection is 2.5" wide, it has 48 pins in it, while the connector for the USB is also 2.5" wide but it only has 40 holes for the pins.

I do think that only the first 40 pins on the drive were used as there was a little connector that went over the first 40 pins to connect them in the laptop.

Does anyone know what I can get to try and connect the drive. I only want to connect it once to get the data off it.

It is a dell laptop with a Fujitsu hard drive.

    This is the drive......

    THanks in advance

The connector only needs to cover the 43 / 44 pins that are grouped together, there should be a gap and then 4 pins on their own.

Make sure the adapter is connected properly, there should be a pin missing in the configuration, and one of the holes on the adapter should be filled in, make sure these match up when connecting.

On the maplin page above it clearly states "2.5" HDD need a 40 pin to 44 pin convertor". You need to get the converter for it.

The box contents include the "2.5" converter cable" according to that page just make sure it was supplied.

I thought that too. But the cable wouldn't fit either.

Apparently, my drive is a 2.5" SATA as opposed to an IDE.

I brought it back today and changed it for this....

...and it did the job. Happy days. Thanks fo rthe replies.
