DVD's on the Wii

Sorry if this is a stupid question, or if it's in the wrong place. I was given a Wii for Christmas completely out of the blue. I'm not much of a gamer so I don't know how much I'll use it, but I thought I could leave it hooked up in my room and use it as a DVD player, but now I see it won't read DVD's.

So, is there anyway to get it to read them? Downloads or accessories or anything?

    Please and thank you :)

Nintendo Wii's don't play DVDs, it's as simple as that. It's possible to mod it to make it play, but that would take a lot of work.

It's actually quite easy to do, & a capability which should have been available out of the box. It would save people having to modify the console to get it to play dvd movie discs, which is something it is fully capable of doing.

If the Wii was modded or designed to play DVDs wouldnt it need an add on fan?

I read somewhere that the optical drive in the black Wii consoles can't read DVDs.

They aren't true DVDs, they use a proprietary format that most drives cannot read, except some LG DVD-ROMs and I don't know if that was intentional. I believe they read the disc from the outside-in rather than inside-out.

FYI, thats the same way the XBOX reads its games too. Not sure about XBOX360.

WiiMC is pretty good for playing DVDs.
