    Hi All,

during the cold snap recently, in the middle of the night the we were woken up by the this cracking and popping noise. I had to go up to the attic to investigate.
and it was coming from the roof and not just one part but nearly all over the roof. Lasted nearly an hour. i've no idea what it was.

We've natural slates fastened with copper nails.

could it be the copper nails expanding and contracting in the cold,
is it the slates themselves, or could it be the timber ?

any ideas ? should i be concerned ?

it was probably the slates AND the timber
    but mainly the timber
it's just the timber settling down and contracting

in this case its not the timber, but the water freezing underneath the slates, water travels up the slates by capillary action and then freezes causing the ice to expand hence the cracking sound, more obvious on natural slates due to the bigger uneven space between the slate and the one above it.............

Was there heavy snow on the roof at the time?
