I have an jailbroken and ultrasn0w unlocked Iphone 3g on baseband 06.15.00 and IOS 4.2.1. How would I go about putting it back to factory settings safely?

Download f0recast and run it. If ya have bootloader 5.8 ya can downgrade the baseband and then just restore in itunes

You can download a custom firmware with the baseband preserved and just install it through itunes. Personally i find iOS4 to be terrible on a 3g, Id roll it back to 3.1.2 myself.

have a look at sinfuliphone or redmondpie for downloadable firmwares of your choice.

No matter what firmware the op tries install now. The baseband will remain at 06.15.00

Thats right, the baseband will just throw the itunes error as it cant be downgraded but theres an unlock for this baseband due very soon, My point was that he can install a cooked IPSW from an older firmware, even newer firmwares if needed. :) (i know 4.2.1 is the current one at the moment,)
