okelydokely, not for me, but Someone I Know....

Currently have an 06 B6 Passat 2.0Tdi with 110k miles on it. Def doesn't want to do that again, oh no....

Car is co car, so has to be diesel, and mileage isn't huge, but has to, has to, has to be, reliable.......

Max budget, incl disposing of Passat - 19k, and preferably on a trade.

So, I was asked about the following choices....

    Scirocco Tdi w/DSG
    Golf Tdi w/DSG
    Focus Tdci

Now, my thinking is that both the Scirocco and Golf are basically same as aforementioned B6 Money Pit, and that the Ford would be a good alternative. However, He feels the Ford is too weedy (1.6).

So, what say Ye ...incl viable alternatives out there ?

I would rather you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise I suggest you pick up a bus pass and get the ********* ********* off the road”

Why even consider a TDI from VAG when he already had the reliability issues already?
Anyway - Diesel Subaru legecy, 2.0 TDCI Focus or Mondeo or go petrol.

Last of the old shape Accord 2.2 diesel? Or even a Civic but there'd be a lot of comfort lost compared to the Passat.

A friend of mine has the Civic diesel and it feels very pokey indeed. The refinement of the Accord with the same engine is missing though. The Accord is a better all round option than the Civic I think?

Comfort is a relative term: the Passat sure is, but there again, when you're stuck at the side of the road, you'd probably want it to be ;):p

Would you not recommend him a nice Mazda6 2.0D GalwayTT? I hear they're a great yoke altogether;):)...

A 08 Legacy is pretty rare and the ones that do appear seem to move quickly. Plus the ride set-up is slightly the sporty side of out-and-out comfort.

Would be hard to beat the Accord. Better than any VAG car IMO.

I'm tired of hearing about the Mondeo. The British press love them but anyone I know with an early current model Mondeo has nothing but trouble.

2011 Focus 1.6 TDCI will have a nice bit more power. 128bhp I think, which should give plenty of oomph.

I agree about the Mondeo, but the Accord is just dullness on wheels in my opinion. I don't understand why they have such a big following on here.

Wouldnt the Passat they have now be a PD TDI?
Im not too sure but I havent heard much from the CR TDI being unreliable.

DPF's seem to give a lot of problems all over the place though. Not so much engine related and can be taken off if needed I believe.

A Volvoman calling an Accord boring....:p

I think the Accord would be a good choice...

2.2 Mazda 6 would be my choice. Failing that, an Accord. Failing that, an Insignia 160bhp. Failing that, either choose another VAG or get a bike.

You seem to be overlooking the new Skoda Superb - With their Greenline engines you'd save on the tax - almost sure the greenline version became available in 2009 - Another alternative would be the Skoda Octavia VRS Diesel - a whole lotta motor for you money.

Another alternative would be an Audi A6

How about the New Avensis 2.0 d4d?
I'm considering one of these, driving an 2006 A6 2.0tdi at the moment, love it but time to change.
The Avensis cheaper tax and great mpg is swinging it for me at the moment.

All you have suggested have the same engine or a varient of it as his Passat. He wants away from the VAG.

Mondeo - Tacky, everyone has one.
Focus - Interior is garbage, like the inside of a 90's Toyota.
Superb - Pig Ugly, aggricultural 1.9 diesel that first appeared in an Audi 80 35 years ago.
    Mazda 6 - Boring & anonymous.
Accord - Newest model is quite nice indeed, 2.2cdti is a bit unrefined though.

My choice would be the 2008/09 Subaru Legacy or Outback. Rock solid build quality, practical, most advanced diesel engine in it's class, all wheel drive, huge standard spec. Tax is €300 odd I think. Classy motor and not as common as the over rated rep-mobiles above. Seen as they're as rare as hen's teeth 2nd hand in Ireland importing from UK is probably your best bet.

All I can do with people like you is post up a picture of a Volvo that is the antithesis of boring:

An Accord is a boring car, face it.

I bet you probably don't even know that 'interesting' cars like the Focus ST and RS have Volvo engines powering them.
