Using an ethernet cable and meteor dongle, its all i can make do with, had it working on the xbox a few months back, when i go into network connections there are three options.

    Broadband to Go ..
Local Area Connection (with red x beside it, and says Network Cable Unplugged)
    Network Bridge (same as above)

    ????

Having said that, I'm almost sure I used a straight through months ago [Win7 PC to PS3].

Yeah I thought I did but I've read on forums then that its the straight through one thats needed I can't figure out why it says network cable unplugged when it isnt?

Fair enough. Probably a dodgy cable. Try another. When the cable is connected properly, the tiny green activity lights should be illuminated [or flashing] at each port.

If the lights aren't on then it's either a bad cable or bad port on at least one device.

a light on the ps3? well i've tried two cables, and tried it both on pc and laptop and no go? so u suggest using a crossover cable? It just doesnt recognize the ethernet cable on either the playstation or the pc/laptop...

No. EVERY Ethernet port looks like this.

    Ethernet.jpg

Two tiny lights on it. One green, one orange. If the cable is not damaged and connected and both devices are powered up, the green light should be on or flashing.

It makes no difference. Is the light on or flashing on both/either devices? It's an activity light.

no light beside laptop port, wheres the light on the ps, its not by the port?

tried a crossover cable today, still no joy.. any ideas?

What version of Windows are you using. Windows 7 and maybe Vista have a very easy wizard to configure internet sharing. XP isn't so user friendly but there is a specific option to set it up.

I've only done it once. It wasn't straight forward but only took about 10 minutes. Are you sure that your PC NIC isn't disabled. Very unusual to see a cable in NIC with no lights.

Google would probably your better bet.

    Try this, this or this.

Its Vista, and can't find the wizard? How can I check if my PC NIC is disabled?

Will check them links too, thanks :)

Tried everything in them links, i've been on them before I've tried countless times to no avail.. :o

Can you surf the internet through both of your connections, WIFI and NIC? Only connect one at a time to test.

I'm using a meteor dongle, yeah I can use the internet on the laptop no problem at all..

Also when I go into Internet Sharing Connections there is no drop down for Home Network Connection to choose Local Area Connection? And there is constantly a red x mark beside Local Area Connection in Manage Network Connections :confused::confused:

Not what I mean. I specifically wanted to know if both your wireless AND NIC work. Currently there is a question mark over your connectivity.

Red x generally means that the cable is not connected or there is nothing on the other end of the cable.

Ok, we have seen that you have a NIC. DO you actually have WIFI or a second NIC on your computer?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 637 ✭✭✭Dannyboi3k

No WiFi and not a second NIC... well if it is what you mean, the laptop doesnt see that there is anythin on the other side of the cable, could it be a fault with the PS?

I tried it with an older desktop PC too and it couldn't connect through that either..
Why would there not be a drop down menu to select Local Area Connection though, would that be because it can't see anything on the other end of the cable?! Could be a fault with the PS...?

I'm at a loss. WIth 3G dongle, I would go down the 3G router route. :(
