I think I am right in saying Joyce's copyright expires next week (13th) having regard to s24(1) of the 2000 Act. Any reason I have missed why it wouldn't be?

    Best,

Unless the copyright was sold or assigned to someone else by him.

It could have been passed to his estate.

But, otherwise, yeah, the copyright would expire, AFAIK.

and Joyce scholars have been waiting a long time for this, given the tight control exercised by the Joyce estate over JAJ's writings!

How would selling or assigning the interest extend it? Yeah it passed to his estate and it's his Grandson (?) who owns it at the moment, but this interest will expire on the 13th.

On second reading I don't think I read your post as you intended, what you meant was that it won't be his interest that will be expiring but the subsequent owner's.

They have behaved like vandals, I am sure Joyce turned in his grave over some of their carry-on.

Not too sure on the copyright though ,was'nt there an extension granted a number of years ago to compensate German authors fot the loss of revenue during the war years and applied acroos the board ?

I may be wrong, but if copyright was sold/assigned during his lifetime, then the copyright is vested in another party, which would mean it would last for the lifetime of that party plus 70 years. Maybe I'm wrong there though???

But, if it was not, and it simply passed to his estate, then come the date, copyright would simply expire, and his estate would no longer control the copyright.

It will be out of copyright on the 1st Jan 2012 - not this year - it's the year after the calendar year of death of the author (70 years). The Joyce estate have been looking to extend this but that shouldn't happen.

There'll be many scholars across the world that will be celebrating then!

Yeah I have just read s35 of the 2000 Act which says exactly what you were saying. http://www.irishstatutebook.ie/2000/en/act/pub/0028/sec0035.html#sec35

Not sure of the reasoning behind this but seems like it'll be next year then.
