Is it possible to switch insurance from a car to a van for a day? Van is commercially taxed. Car is just taxed normally.

your own insurance company is the only one that will be able to answer that. different companys will differ.

That's true. If it makes any difference it's axa. And my car is 140 bhp to a 115 bhp van.

I've done it when borrowing cars from a garage. No charge - RSA

I've done it with Axa before but it's Axa broker with bestquote.ie. They said they don't mind as long as it's only the odd time.

Yeah shouldn't be a problem, I've done it loads of times with FBD and it wasn't a problem and no charge so I'd be surprised if you had any trouble!

I assume these have all been car to car changes? It's different when your talking about Private and commercial insurance.

I've tried to change my policies (permenantly) from Private to commercial and vice versa a couple of times and it was a no go. Companies said you have to cancel and start a new commercial/private policy.

Ive done it from car to rental van for a day a few years back. There was a charge but no real hassle. Axa.

Some companies will allow a free change to a van if your moving house, you could try telling them that.

And when they ask where my new address is for the insurance?

The other room in my house? :p

Will you be using the van for private purposes i.e. moving stuff for yourself and not for commercial purposes? If so then you shouldn't have any problem.

Does your existing policy not already cover you to drive another vehicle? The fact that the van is taxed commercially is neither here nor there as far as the insurance company is concerned, I'd reckon you only need to transfer your policy if you're paying for the use of the van i.e. you're hiring it. If you're borrowing it from a friend your own policy should cover you to drive it for private purposes.

The fact that the van is taxed commercially is neither here nor there as far as the insurance company is concerned, as long as you're only using the vehicle for social, domestic and pleasure purposes it doesn't matter if it's a van or a car and you're licensed to drive it which will be the case for a small van.

Well I want to go collect an interior for my car. It's a 220 mile trip either way. The van is my dads and he said he would go with me and drive. But if I can get insurance it will be easier to do it by myself.

And if push comes to shove I can remove the interior and make the trip with the drivers seat. :o

That counts as 'domestic' use, if you are covered to drive other vehicles you will be insured to drive the van but if you really want to transfer your insurance, Axa are good for at least one free transfer to another vehicle and back in the year.

I'm only a named driver :( Thanks though. Should be able to switch on the free transfer per year.

Not too sure if a named driver can avail of swapping policies to a different vehicle, the main policy holder definitely can, but a named driver isn't entitled to the same privileges. But as the others have said only sure way to know is to call your insurance company.
