    Hi,

Just been walking on Sandymount beach and I've noticed there is a ship lifted on 4 pillars. I couldn't see it from that far, but was wondering what is that structure ?

    thanks

Its a ship that can be raised up on legs to stabilise the work area. They have been used in Dublin Bay before for the pipe line out from the sh*t plant

They are slo used for installing wind turbines off shore

Just off to grab my anorak, its getting cold:D

    Hello,

    Not in Dublin port anyway...
    http://www.marinetraffic.com/ais/portdetails.aspx?port_id=245

    Nothing in the Bay either
    http://www.shipais.com/currentmap.php?map=Dublin
although the Tug MTS VALIANT is out there now @2000 3/1/2011 so it may be a Jack-up Barge, which is essentially a working platform that can be towed to where your wokring then literally 'jacked up' on legs that reach the seafloor.
This very important for drilling and other tasks at sea (as it eliminates the effect of the vessel movement)

Perhaps someone who knows about ships could answer whether or not these platforms need to be registered in the same way as boats/ships etc.?

Apart from that can't help you mate, sorry.

There is a Dublin forum somewhere around here, so you'll probably get your answer there.

I'm not sure what it is yet either.

However I don't think we should put it off on getting a Protest going immediately.

Dawdling will only facilitate these bastards in getting established and continuing doing whatever it is that they're up to.

I was told that it was the spare Rig left over from the Shell operation in Mayo, which has been floated round the coast & been converted to a giant Aqua Suction Rig or (ASR) for short, designed to extract (by suction) Dublin Bay prawns from the shallow waters off Sandymount strand!

It is the jack-up barge Excalibur drilling boreholes on behalf of Dublin City Council's Ringsend waste water treatment programme.
