Water crisis 'may force A&E depts to shut'

    Monday, January 03, 2011 - 01:03 PM

A leading hospital consultant is warning that one third of emergency departments may have to close due to water restrictions.

Dr Chris Luke, Consultant in Emergency Medecine at Cork University Hospital, said that with the prevalence of seasonal flu and swine flu a return to work will likely lead to a spread of the disease.

In addition hospitals are struggling to hire enough doctors, which will only exacerbate the problem, Dr Luke said.

"I am really very concerned that about a third of (A&E departments) may have to close in two weeks' time," Dr Luke said

Don't they have a special reserve for hospitals at least?

That is an awful article. In addition to spelling 'medecine' wrong, it doesnt explain how the 1/3 of A/Es will be closed by water shortgaes, as opposed to the NCHD crisis.

I would have thought they'd have reserves too? That's kinda scary if they start closing them!

Sorry, it was the only one I could find at the moment. I am sure there are better but my Googling skillz are not up to scratch.

Chris Luke must be on the speed dial of every working journalist in this country. Falls on the ice? Quote from Chris Luke
Gerry Ryan died after taking cocaine? Quote from Chris Luke
Head shop drugs are actually kinda dangerous because nobody knows what goes into them? Quote from Chris Luke
Fair play to him - he always seems to know his stuff - but are there any other doctors working out there?

Hmm. Not many articles to be found yet and not on the Six One. I'd've thought it was a fairly serious report, unless they don't want to scare monger us into a frenzy that may cause a violent revolution of sorts.

It's a misquote, on radio was saying 1/3 of EDs face shutting because of Doctor shortages. To the very next question about issues over the new year, was talking about the Mercy Hospital not having the ability to process bloods in-house one day, because of water supply problems.

"reserves" is a a cool word.

You can have reserves of butter - but water.. hmmm..

The reserves has to come from somewhere, and there is a shortage of it.

They can store some of it too, but the requirements of a hospital would be huge id imagine - where exactly would they store it - even if they did have a massive tank somewhere with 1000's of gallons - id say it wouldnt last very long
