yeah was there last year, word of advice if you are planning to visit the opening day or on a saturday get there as early as possible, if you plan to get there by 5pm or after forget it you won't get into any of the beerhalls and if you do you won't get sitting down anywhere and if you ain't sitting down you ain't getting served, the site that hosts the festival is also rather large and can be quite easy to get lost because there are hundreds of carnaval rides, food stands around every corner

official site, its on from sep 17th to october 3rd next year http://www.oktoberfest.de/en/

we stayed out in a b+b in the southern outskirts of the city, not sure how anyone could sleep in the city centre as its noisy after 12am, especially anywhere near the main railway station

ryanair fly into Memmingen from ireland, its about a 1hr 30min train ride from there into munich, probably the cheapest fair you will get that time of year

its just great fun, the live bands in the beerhalls make it an incredible atmosphere, one thats hard not to get caught up in, everyone singing stuff like sinatras "new york new york" and mary hopkins "those were the days" was a sight to behold, munich is a nice city too with sights to see during the day (olympic park is really nice that time of year, bmw museum)

we took the train down to fussen at the foothills of the alps after and stayed there a few days, right on the austrian border, lovely little place and only about 2hrs (€20 by train)

Another great thing about Oktoberfest is you don't get hangovers no matter how much you drink thanks to their naturally brewed beers!!

theres a few other threads with info on boards by the way, tips on tents and accomodation etc.

    search and you will find!

The only thing to add is that you should start looking into accomodation now, or accomodation strategies.
Actually, maybe its even late at this stage to stay in Munich itsself.
www.hrs.com is showing pretty much everything downtown, even the direst kips, at the 200Euro + mark per room for the middle weekend.

Perhaps we were just topping up the alcohol from the day before but certainly we didn't suffer any hangovers.

agree with this, its amazing to see how many arrive in munich without accommodation plans, i saw dozens sleeping on the floor of the main railway station, suppose its the cheapest you will get :p

i used these guys lots of private accommodation will be available, most of it is quite a distance from the city centre but munich has a very good public transport system so its easy to get into and out of town quickly

I was there this year and I had a whopper of a hangover after the first day! Worst headache of my life! Well worth it tho :D

I would also recommend not going straight back in to work after- you definitely need a day or two to recover!
