Trading 2 cars for 1 new one...

Ok, The In-laws are thinking of getting rid of one of their cars, as the Father in law have retired now and doesn't need his car as much and 1 car would do them. They have a 07 Almera with less than 40k klms on the clock and a 06 Focus 1.6 with around 90k klms on the clock. Both are in great nick FDSH on both. I was thinking it would be quicker and better to trade both in against a new, 11 reg, car, rather than try to sell both privately. Would they make than much of a saving by selling 1 or both and buying new as a cash buyer? Or does it make more sense to just trade both. I think they are looking at getting a new Focus, I told them to go for the 1.6TDCi Ghia with a few extras to help get a better trade in.

Is there really a need for them to sell both cars and buy a new one? If the cars are in great condition and have low milage why not just sell one privatly and keep the other? I'm sure they won't be putting up massive milage on the one they keep so they should get years out of it if its looked after and I'm sure it would be! I'd much rather a few grand into the pocket from the sold car anyway thats for sure!

    Chauffe, Marcel, chauffe!

I'm with alan1990 on this one. Why don't they put both up for a private sale and see if either or both sell? If they both sell, they can have a huge discount off a new car as a cash buyer. If one sells, they can decide to either keep the other or trade it in. If neither sells, they can see if a dealer would trade in there 2 cars, but they will get a very, very bad deal :(

a dealer won't want that because he would have 2 cars to sell instead of one, so he will give them a terrible deal or tell them where to go.

Cheers, never thought of the poor deal. Will look at getting them both sold privately. They never had a new car, but could afford to get one now.
