    Mazda 6 for me too.

I have to go with Mazda6 as well. Boring but bulletproof. Had one for more than 3 years and it just kept going.

    I'd pick the Civic.
Is 1.8 the max size you want to go? IF you went up to a 2 litre, you could pick up a nice Accord

Civic for me as well - if you could go up to 2.0 litre, a Type S Civic would be a rare alternative to an Accord!

Mazda 6 then so! The new shape ford focus is nice too, but I'm not sure which one you are going for.

Based on the list above - I'd be another to vote for the Mazda 6

It was the only car to serve me for 3 years (over 115000 miles on the clock when sold) without any repairs.

Mazda 6. Had one for 3 years, not an ounce of trouble.
    Great handling/ride.
Try get the facelifted one, slight improvements in interior plastics, refinement.
The 1.8 is a very durable unit.

The Mondeo 1.8 are very good, little to no trouble. I think they have the same engine as a 1.8 Mazda 6. Better build quality than the rest on the list.

How about a smaller engined Mazda 3? Without knowing the OP's circumstances fully it could be the better alternative. If for example OP is young or doesn't have too many years NCB a 1.8 Maszda 6 might prove a bit of nightmare to insure...not necessairly saying that is the case either OP. I'd feel also that if the OP does a lot of city driving or just carries himself more often than not in the car a 1.8 litre Mazda 6 might be wasted. Also come five years down the line if the OP decided to change he may not have too much luck at shifting the Mazda 6. Just imagine how difficult it is to sell a 2000 Mazda 626 these times. Think for that matter if considering the 1.8 Mazda 6 the OP should strongly consider a 1.8 Mondeo also, pretty similar cars and there would be a greater choice of Mondeos out there...would probably end up getting better bang for your buck with the Mondeo.

Sorry for the rant...just trying to throw a different spin on it.

Actually I do believe the Mazda 6 share duratec engines with the Mondeo alright. Not sure if its across all Mazda 6 models though or which models for that matter.

Yeah I just checked it up. 1.8's and 2 litre's are used for both.

Mazda 6 are reliable and drive well, good chassis, the 1.8 is thirsty tho.

If you got a nice Zetec Focus that's what I'd be going for.

The Mazda 6 is a nice safe bet but they're so boring. They facelifted them (darker front lights etc.) in 06 so try stretch to one of those if anything.

    Mazda 6 by a mile

I'd go with the Mazda 6 too.

I'd disagree with the concensus here that they are boring though. I drove one a few years ago and found it very enjoyable to drive. Handles very well and has good feedback from the steering. Many car journalists rated the 6's handling second only to the Mondeo at the time too.

Just avoid the diesel model at all cost.

They do drive well and the suspension is sporty.

Of that list the Mazda 6 would be my vote too...

Toss up between the Mazda 3 and 6.

Personally I would save a bit on tax and go for the 3 as its pretty similar with regards to internal dimensions.

It all depends on your own needs really but one of the two would make a very reliable and good mode of transport.

    Honda's are bulletproof.

    I have had two Civic's - never a problem.
