Lidl have car care items on Monday 10th Jan. Their synthetic oil is high spec and great value at €5 per litre. I've been using it for a couple of years now with no problems. Last year's thread here. They also have semi-synth 10W40 5 litres for €17, and regular mineral oil 15W40 5 litres for €15.

Specification (on bottle) [Note: Specs from last year's supply]

    5W40 ACEA A3/B3, A3/B4, API SM/CF
    BMW Longlife-98, MB 229.3, Opel GM-LL-B-025, Porsche, VW-Norm 502 00, 505 00

Specification from manufacturer (again from last year):

PENNASOL SUPER PACE SAE 5W40, made in Germany.

    API SM/CF,
    ACEA A3/B3, A3/B4,
    VW-Norm 502 00, 505 00
    Porsche
    MB 229.3
    BMW Longlife-98
    Opel GM–LL–B-025
    Renault RN 700, RN 710

    Their Car Care page.

They also have other car items on the same day separate link.

I got a concentrated screenwash there one time that smelled like sweaty old socks. Got bulbs there, they were grand. Dunno about the engine oil, last time they had it it didn't seem to shift in a hurry. I would be wary of buying engine oil in lidl....is it good stuff or what?.

Why would you be worried? If the oil meets the specification required by your engine, then you can use it. I wouldn't judge oil's quality by the price or brand sticker on the bottle.

The 50%+ bulbs are well worth the money. Poor man's nightbreakers, couldn't see much of a difference when I replaced one with the other.

You get what you pay for. Sometimes you can pick up a bargain. But engine oil isn't something I would skimp on.
I use very good oil in my car, always have and always will

Same as me. I use higher specification oils than recommended for my car. But I would never ignore a product just because it is cheaper or because it is not manufactured by a company that spend billions on advertisements.

I was on the other side of the fence last year, but after trying out the Tesco oil (EUR28 for 4.5litres 5w-40 Fully Synth, not on offer, thats the price) Im kinda converted.

Put it another way, if you buy good Oil at half the price you can change it twice as often as premium price Oil. Thats gotta be better for the car than any mystery additives.

Exactly... This is high a quality product and you get the same protection and performance as from a lot more expensive engine oil, branded by other top manufacturers. I was also quite suspicious before I used the product...

There are always exceptions to the rule, never denied the fact :)

But for my own peace of mind, and the health of my engine, I would prefer not to chance it. I change my oil every 5-6k miles anyway, so no expense is spared in that regard

It's good stuff yeah. Had 2 golfs having done 40000 miles on it on fairly extended intervals like 12000 miles driven hard and engines sound like sewing machines still no top end rattle like most Irish cars.

Would anyone be brave enough to use a litre to top up a new VRS Octavia tdi engine??
Car is on longlife oil at present (30k service interval)

I cant tell you that lad. I change the oil in my passats every 15k and I use longlife oil. 30k until the first service is a bit long for a first service IMO.

dont do it!! the spec listed above for the vag range is 505 00. this is only suitable for the older diesels that came in the early mk4s. the 90 and 110 bhp tdi engines (not sure what oil the sdi needs). its not suitable for the pd engine and i think the cr needs 507 00 spec oil

Just to throw this in too, Halfords have 20% off Castrol EDGE 0w30 and 0w40, I grapped 12 litres.

How much is the 4L container of 0W40 now? By the way, their branded fully synthetic oil is very good as well.

Not going to leave it to 30k
It will be done at 15k but was wondering about top up

0w40 is €36.99 I think for 4 litres. I was going to get it but I have 0w30 in it at the moment so got that instead, that was €43.99.

Not really worth it when they charge €1000 more for insurance than anyone else. :P

Does anyone know if It's actually fully synthetic or the hydracracked stuff ? It will still meet relevant specs but there is a significant difference. FOr anyone who was dubious last year I don't see how using it has convinced ye unless of course ye have been using it no engines on test beds, which I doubt :pac:

In this case - no. But for me they were about €50 dearer, so I don't mind paying that for the benefit of having cheaper oil, as I drive quite a lot and do about 5 oil services per year ;).

Hard to say, not much reliable info on the net about it, but here is the data sheet for the stuff:

I would suspect that is a group 2 oil, Mobil 1 being group 4 and being genuinely fully synthetic, castrol would be group 3 and also is hydrocracked.

    Now now :pac:
I'm in no position to say which is better. Castrol Edge is a group 3 hydrocracked oil branded as fully synthetic. Mobil 1 is a group4 genuinely fully synthetic (made in the lab) oil.

Mobil reckon Castrol shouldn't be allowed to brand their tack as fully synthetic as it actually isn't, the API agreed with Castrol in so far as the base mineral ingredient of their oils has been refined (or whatever the nerd term is) to a degree that it is now non mineral. (was a big court casr years back)

Interestingly in the case of the expensive Castrol oils their profit margins would be more than the folks at Mobil as the hydrocracking lark is less expensive than actually making a genuine fully synthetic, all of this is not passed on to the consumer.

I've used Halfords own brand fully syn myself and it's defo hydrocracked.

My own opinion would be Mobil 1 is the ultimate tack for a decent car nowadays if it meets the manufacturers spec.

They also have their own bulbs reduced, super brilliance range. Got two H7s for the price of 1, so too for €25 :)

Slightly OT but I serviced my mk1 Focus with Halfords own brand semi synth.

This Mobil Super 3000 is now only 2 euro more for 5l:

I've got a previous model - similar features - and find it excellent. Wouldn't suit a serious ICE-head for sound quality but the USB and bluetooth I find to be perfect. Position the external mike carefully for phone call quality. I had to get an antenna adaptor for mine too - fiver in Halfords or so.

    Here we go, again :D

Extracted from Pennasol specs for their Super Pace 5W-40
....PENNASOL SUPER PACE consists entirely of synthetic base oils....
Outside of the USA, it is illegal, afaik, to describe oil as synthetic if it is not fully so.
    Specification:
    API SM/CF
    ACEA A3/B3, A3/B4
Approved in compliance with / under different label
    VW-Norm 502 00, 505 00
    Porsche A 40
    MB-Freigabe 229.3
    BMW Longlife-98
    Opel GM–LL–B-025
    Level:
    Renault RN 700, RN 710

They also give the technical specs on the page I linked above.

Presuming you mean the Pennasol oil we are talking about here, the technical specs (although not as comprehensive as the Wolf specs) are very similar.

For comparison with my extract from the Pennasol PDF linked above, the Wolf oil you linked gives:
    SPECIFICATION LEVEL :
    API SM, SL/CF
    PORSCHE A40
    ACEA A3/B4-08
    OPEL GM-LL-B-025
    VW 502.00 / 505.00
    RENAULT RN 0710/0700
    MB 229.3
    PSA B71 2296
    BMW LL-01

A few differences in the Manufacturer specs between the two...

Is there much of a price difference?

I bought one yesterday. It works a treat. You might need to get an adapter kit for the ISO plugs at the back. €18 -€25 in Halford's, depending on car model.
