    Oh dear, oh dear...

My girlfriend will probably be inheriting an automatic Corsa C which we'll both be using. I don't have enough money for a car right now. Selling it ain't on the cards (sadly) and I've heard a few bad things about it, namely that the autobox is crap and the steering rack is made of putty and coathangers.

Has anyone owned or driven one and are the rumours true? I've been a passenger in it and the gearchanges are jerky as hell.

I can't speak for the gearbox, but the Corsa in general is a fine solid car for it's size, much better than a Fiesta or Yaris to drive.

i wouldnt go as far as to say its better than a fiesta or yaris by any means, but they arent the worst cars. auto is a bit of a downer though.

Yep I can vouch for one those Corsa's. My father had one for three years and anti-rollbar droplinks apart, it gave no trouble whatsoever. His was more 'tiptronic' than auto as you can shift manually from first to fifth, or run it fully auto if you wish! In manual mode, the fuel consumption and performance was very good for a 1.2. Gearshift in manual or auto was very smooth and certainly wasn't jerky or clonky. One reason why I believe this car was running so well was that it was owned by a clergyman who took very good care of it and had it serviced religiously (no pun intended :D)

The gearbox in Dad's gave no grief whatsoever, and I understand that the only part in those which causes a gear to be lost is if a solenoid in the box packs up. There's one solenoid for each gear. If it fails, it logs a fault code for that solenoid, and they can be replaced with the gearbox in situ (drop the gearbox sump off!). Solenoids @ UK prices are about £60 a pop.

Compare that to a Corsa C (manual gearbox) my brother owned at the same time which was a total dog. Drop links, MAF, EGR valve, and then the dreaded power steering malaise occured with the steering going very heavy in one direction. He gave up a broken man and flogged the car at that point.

Bottom line OP is that if you or your GF are getting the car for nothing then take it and see what happens. You might be surprised at what you get ! ;)
