Left my iPhone in a taxi - can I claim from insurance?

My beloved iPhone has been through a lot. After cracking its screen (again), I'm after leaving it in a taxi this evening. I had put it in my pocket but didn't realise that there was a rip in my jacket and it fell out.

I realised I was missing my phone about 20 seconds after I got out of the taxi and a really nice woman on the street let me use her phone to ring mine, but no answer. I've rung it a couple of times since, but no joy. I know it's not on silent and, even if it was, I had an alarm set which would have gone off a short while after I left it. I was chatting away with the taxi driver during the whole journey and I'd hate to think he'd just take the phone, but maybe that's naive.

What I'm wondering now is, will my o2 phone insurance cover accidental loss like this. I'm going to check the T&Cs myself, but I've heard stories of people trying to claim and then losing out due to various loopholes in insurance policies. I think I'm going to have to report the phone as stolen tomorrow anyway to make a claim.

If anybody has any experience / advice , I'd appreciate it!

    Thanks.

your insurance would have to allow for loss of the phone. Seen as it was not technically stolen you cant claim it as such.

loads of claims get turned down cos they claim it was lost through negligence

This is what I'm worried about. My OH's phone was taken from his pocket a few months ago and he was told that, if he stated on the insurance form that it was in his jacket pocket, he might not be able to claim - contributory negligence kind of thing.

If it's on they might be able to get a gsm location, if you had an iPhone 4 you could have used the free find my iphone feature :o

Meanwhile, we have others complaining about the high cost of iPhone insurance.

Well, my insurance is covering my phone and I'm very glad. That's what I pay the insurance for.

I don't think the very occasional person losing their iPhone a few times is driving insurance up as much as people like the taxi driver who went off with mine.

And what else would you think drives insurance claims up, if not claims?

I get that. :) I was referring to the cause of claims.

the taxi driver didnt go off with yours, you left it there at your own fault. he/she may not of even known it was there and the next passenger scooped it up.

    The two aren't mutually exclusive!

I know I left it there, but there is no way the taxi driver could have missed it. I could see the car driving out of my estate as I was ringing my phone. He definitely hadn't picked up a passenger! This isn't a slur against taxi drivers. On the contrary - I was very surprised it happened.

Two claims in two weeks !!

Never had to claim but I thought that claims had to be at least six months apart ?

Put them on your house insurance,or if your renting on contents insurance. All risks. Miles cheaper and anyone I now who made a claim had no hassles, even if they dropped it or left it in the pub.
Never insure with the mobile operators.

One problem with the house insurers is excess - normally you have to pay the first €250-300

Fraid it doesn't work like this at all. You insure it under your house insurance. The first €275 is excess with aviva. You have paid say €300 for a 32gb on o2. The insurance will pay you €25. Your premium will probably be €50. They will only pay up to what you paid NOT the actual cost of a replacement. If you bought it from apple for 6/700 then they will pay up to whatever is on your receipt. This has been confirmed to me by Aviva so i'm not quite sure what your friends managed to do

Not With FBD contents. I have it insured as a special item for €609. They Just asked for the serial number. I asked every question imaginable when I got it a year and a half ago. So its fully insured if I lose outside etc.
I wont have to pay any excess on my iPhone if I have to make a claim.
I have not made a claim so far.

does it say in the policy that there is no excess for a claim, no matter what someone tells ya on the phone its what is on paper that matters when a claim arises

I think if you log it as lost you have to have a report from the guards or something like that though

You got me thinking, as its been well over a year since I got this.
I decided to have a look through my policy.

My Iphone is covered under "All Risks" for €29.35 for the sum of €609
Which is separate from the rest of the contents which are insured for €119.41

So I referred to the manual about excess. It went on to say excess has increased up from €100 to €200

But in relation to "All Risks" It has this.

"We are pleased to advise, unlike other insurer, no excess applies to claims made on items insured under the All Risk Sections, Personal or Property Owners Liability coverage or indeed under many of the additional benefits provided as standard under Section 1 of your policy."

Ok It appears what I have is out of date. Here is the latest Home Multiperil Policy

Page 30 Talks about "All Risks"

    My insurance is with 123.ie.
    My excess is €100.
It cost me €18 to name the phone and insure it for €600 or the cost of a replacement, whichever is lower. The excess doesnt come into play for the phone, or a few other things i've named.

I got an updated itemized page with the details of all the items named an there is a column called excess. Its zero.

I asked all the questions I needed to.
I also checked with a friend who works in FBD how this works to be even more sure.
Im covered with no excess for €600, no matter how I lose my phone or break it.
Thats why I checked with my friends who I know made claims before too. I wanted to make sure that I knew of someone who actually got the full amount of their claim.
    Im 100% covered.

you're excess you're saying is €100 in the 2nd line and then you go on to say you now have no excess, how is that?
this sounds great to be honest.

do you know what's funny, I've had phones since I was 15 (31 now) so pretty much as long as phones have been available in Ireland and not once in all that 16 years have I ever lost a phone.

On another interesting point, I don't drink.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 39 Stuart mulvaney

That is a very interesting point . at least you wont need insurance as you are confident that you wont loose your phone,

    PS I dont drink :pac:

I would go with that too, f&%k em, they will do anything they can to not pay out the insurance.

if the phone was ringing in the cab would you not have expected him to be slightly surprised by it and at least stop and look round. Of course there is a possibility that he was deaf, along with the possibility that you didn't actualy lose it in the taxi!

As proof of that I'll cite the passenger who I took to Dublin airport, who rang up the base shortly after dropping him off to claim his wallet was in my car ( it wasn't, he dropped it on the ground and someone luckily handed in to the airport police with his works ID ) didn't stop him ranting on to our base op that it had to be in my car and if I couldn't see it then I was lying
