We just tried testing our eircom phonewatch alarm. Set up the motion sensors and set it off to see would eircom ring us. The alarm went off for one minute and we disarmed it. No phone call from eircom at all, five minutes later

If I cancel the subscription to eircom, will we still be able to use the alarm without the monitoring?

You can still have monitoring but get the dialer to call you instead of Eircom.

There is a delay of between 20-30 seconds in the alarm contacting the monitoring station. It all depends on how it is set up. There may be a problem with your dialer in the alarm. You should of rang them to ask why you had not being contacted.

Depending on the alarm you have installed it could be set up to notify you in the event of the alarm activating. What system have you installed ?

Call them up and do a test while they are on the phone. That will tell you if there are any problems.

I tried out the system in a "real world" scenario without eircom on call to test it out and nothing happened. I will be calling them soon to ask why they didn't contact us and to cancel the contract. Really pissed off about this. Imagine this was a burglar who had entered. They wold have been gone within 2 minutes! :(

A lot of customers with alarms often set them off when coming in or out of the house by mistake.. I think there is some sort of time (might be a minute) whereas if the monitoring station see the alarm being turned off with the code, it was probably a mistake..

Leave it ring until they call you, that's how it works, if you don't have your password they call the cops..

I cancelled my monitoring and still use my alarm as a normal house alarm. I personally felt that I was wasting my money paying them every year, I have very good neighbours anyway who would call me if they heard alarm, or come in and save me.

    :)

EDIT: if a burglar did enter they could not shut off the alarm without the code, even if you were under duress forced to enter code I think if you hit 5 (check this out I'm not sure) as the last digit of your code, it will turn off the alarm but send a silent panic alarm to the monitoring station,..

The alarm is meant to contact the monitoring station every day so they should know if there is a problem with the dialer. If your doing a test, your land line should go dead when the alarm seizes the line to dial out to them.

    :)

If thats the case depending on the alarm you have installed you can get it to ring your phone instead of the monitoring station.

Just a quick update. Cancelled the contract with Eircom Phonewatch. If someone wanted to get in badly enough with a wailing alarm going off, they will stay in the house for about 2 minutes max I think.

Thinking of going the security camera route...

    Thanks for the update.

If you let me know what system you have installed hopefully I will be able to help you set it up to ring your phone since you have cancelled the monitoring.
