Wife bought a 2009 VW Passat (1.4 TSI) earlier this year.
She has no mass on it, and wants to change it for a Nissan Qashqai.

I am guessing that to trade down a year for a 2008 Qashqai (1.5 diesel) she will end up putting 1k or so with her own, any opinions, or advice?

you'd be lucky to do it for 1k. it will cost a garage half that at least to prep your passat for resale. then they have to take into account how long it will sit on their forecourt etc.

Don't know the exact values of those cars but I'm sure you're aware that the Qashqai is a big seller in Ireland so secondhand prices will reflect this.

On the general topic of trading sideways, remember that if you do the deal with a franchise dealer, he will have to give you a warranty with the new car and probably a new set of tyres, both of which will bump the price so I'd try and do the deal privately i.e. sell and buy privately, otherwise it will be a relatively expensive switch. You certainly won't do the switch via a dealer for 1K or anywhere near it given that you want to swap an 09 petrol for a popular 08 diesel.

I thought 1k might be light alright.
    Cheers for the advice.

A diesel Qashqai will sell all day long, a petrol Passats will not. I'd say you will be lucky if a dealer entertains the idea of a trade down. If they do it will cost you alot more than €1k.

I'd try and sell the Passat privately first. If you price it cheap enough to tempt a buyer it might still work out better than trying to trade down.
