I was thinking about getting a new saloon and was looking at the Mitsubishi Lancer, is there a reason they're priced cheaper than most new cars of the same size?

If you have any other suggestions I'm all ears.

Loads of options. Loads and loads.

Lancers are cheap for a reason. They are simply not competitive.

A Lancer is not a desirable car and normally mostly petrols which don't sell as well as Diesel models these days.

For 20K you should be looking at cars at up to €22,000 as you will get those in on budget.

Here is a possible ex company car (Its not a 520i, its a 520d - silly seller)

depends what kind of car you want , dont be a number plate snob and only look at the year for 20k there is almost no decent saloon car you couldnt get
Ford Mondeo fantastic value for money and far superior to a lancer
    mazda 6 the same
    Audi A4 or A6
    Bmw 3 or 5 series
    Skoda Octavia or Superb
    Honda accord

So I'm pretty much set on getting a BMW 3 series, does anyone know which models fall into the €156 tax bracket? Is it just the 318d?

I think most of the diesels

    Get the 320d

the 318d is a detuned 2.0 diesel anyway

the 330d is only band c tempting no :)

I've recommended the Skoda Octavia and Superb before, but the Mazda 6 is also a decent motor - new model looks good too

You may as well stretch to a 320d if you can! http://www.carzone.ie/search/BMW/3-Series/320D-SE-/201049200494053/advert?channel=CARS

Give a look at A4's before you settle on a 3 series as well.

318d and 320d manuals are both €156 to tax from 2008 onwards. Even a 330d is only something like €445 to tax.

I have a 2008 318d MSport which has 143bhp, it's no world beater but has enough power for my needs. Can be remapped to 178bhp easily enough which is the same as a stock 320d of similar vintage.

You went from a volvo 2.0d S40 to the 3-series yeah? (if my deductions from other replies are correct!)

How did you find the change? Massive difference?
