Hi, I have just recently finished a short part time xmas temp job. I have been taxed quite high for the last 3 pay checks and under the deductions on my payslip, it states these are PAYE & PRSI. Since it has been ages since I have worked in a job that have actually provided me with a payslip, I forget what the story is with these deductions. Are they refundable or is this large chunk of my wages as a result of the messed up economy at the mo?

I would say you were on Emergency Tax,I think it's something like 42% of your income. The good news is you can get it refunded, the Revenue website explains it all. You send your p45 that you got when you finished upwork along with another form you download off the Revenue site and they will issue you a cheque in return.

Quite likely to be emergency tax. Initially when you start work in a job you get a default tax credits and standard rate cut-off. After a number of weeks you end up with no tax credits and paying tax at the high rate. As it's 2011 you'll have to get a P21 balancing statement to sort out a refund. This will take months as the tax office will be very busy dealing with them.
