Iphone 4 unresponsive - just apple logo

    Can anyone help me please.

Ive a Jailbroken iphone 4 version 4.0.1 which i got from apple.

Last night it froze for some reason, and crashed. I tried to turn it back on but the only thing that came up was the apple logo. I left it for a few mins as it usually takes a while for some power to come into it before you can use it(if the battery is drained).
But I ended up falling asleep and woke up 9 hours later with the problem still there....the apple logo on the screen even though it was charging all night?

I tried doing a soft reset(sleep button+home button for 10 seconds)....but still can't get it work. It still just comes up the apple logo?

Can anyone tell me what the problem could be?

    Bloody raging tbh

    Thanks in advance.

If you plug it into iTunes does anything show up?

Best option is to plug it into you computer and boot up iTunes. Put it into DFU mode and restore it from iTunes.

    DFU Mode: http://www.iclarified.com/entry/index.php?enid=1034

No nothing happens when i plug it into itunes. If I do the DFU thing...will I lose my jailbreak?

Yes. You'll have to re-Jailbreak. If you restore fully and the problem keeps happening, at least you can send it to Apple without a obvious jailbreak in place.

ok, but what I want to know is when I restore, will I have to restore it to the new/latest 4.2 firmware(which can't be jailbroken yet) or will I be able to restore it to the 4.0.1 which is the firmware I have now(and which there is a jailbreak for)? I have the SHSH blobs saved when I was jailbreaking as someone said its the only way you'll be able to restore to an earlier firmware.

do i have to download the 4.0.1 firmware first? Its says on itunes that I've will restore and update to the latest version if I continue?

How do i restore to just the 4.0.1 firmware?

Yeah look for it on iclarified.com and then when it's downloaded hold shift and click restore in iTunes. That will allow you to pick the ipsw.
Just make sure ya edit the host file first or it will fail

I think its gona be too complicated for me to restore to the same firmware Im currently on which is 4.0.1

I might as well just update to the latest version, but will there be a jailbreak for the 4.2.1 version?

Can't bear losing the jailbreak as the iphone is 100% better with SBsettings etc on it.

I understand all apart from editing the host file???

editing the host file is usually done to bypass authentication checks when activating software online.

the location of the HOSTS file on Windows 7 is

    C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc

    on mac it's

    /etc/hosts

    ok lads heres my problem:

I've downloaded the apple firmware 4.0.1 for the iphone 4.

I held shift and clicked the restore button on itunes to which I preceded to download the above firmware, but as suspected I got the error saying it was unable to restore(due to not editing the host file)

What i need to know is the steps to take in order to successfully restore to the above firmware?

I did save my SHSH blobs when jailbreaking but I have no idea how to go about sorting this out.

Can someone please link/show me how to edit the host file so that I can restore it to 4.0.1(which is the version I had before this problem).

Otherwise I'm forced to just restore and update to the latest firmware and never able to jailbreak...which makes my iphone very basic imo.

    Thanks guys.

Just add the gs apple line. It's an ip address
Save it and restore and then remove the line afterwards

Add this to the host file and save it

And I 100% did click the "make my life easier" to save my ShSh blobs when jailbreaking on www.jailbreakme.com

But I have no idea where these shsh files are saved?

Looks like I'll have to update to 4.2.1 :(((((((

Sorry to hear this Carlo, must be a right pain.

I had a similar problem with an iPhone (wouldn't turn on at all, DFU etc didn't work), and I phoned apple and had it replaced within a week. I wouldn't be concerned about it being jailbroken when sending it to them. The first thing they will have to do is restore it anyway. The one I sent them was jailbroken and nothing was said. Their number is 1850 946 191

Cheers Conor, yeah thats my only concern is that when I ring them up and explain to them what happened, they might ask did I jailbreak it?

I do remember last night the indicator for out of battery came on, so maybe that has something to do with it not restoring to the new firmware?

Do i tell them its jailbroken if I ring them?

    download tinyumbrella from here http://thefirmwareumbrella.blogspot.com/
run it and connect the iphone and click save my shsh, it will show ya what firmwares ya have shsh for on cydia

if 4.0.1 is there, click start tss server and do the same again in itunes, shift restore
ya might get an error near the end but just go back to tinyumbrella and click kick out if recovery

No, act like a technophobe and sound like you've never heard of jailbreaking or anything else like it.

ok I got it restored to 4.2.1! When I plugged it back into itunes I tried to restore it again and it just installed the new update.

So phone is set to factory settings which I'm glad to have, but at the same time I've lost my jailbreak and all the cydia tweaks etc.

So I can just go and sync all my apps from itunes back over to iphone?

If a jailbreak becomes available down the line will I be able to retrieve all my apps that I purchased from cydia?

ya can use redsn0w to jailbreak it but its tethered and still a beta

ok i did the above and I got the following under the "Saved SHSH's for IPhone":

    iphone4 4.0.2(8A400)
    iphone4 4.1 (813117)
    iphone4 4.2b3 (8C5115C)

So does this mean I can downgrade to 4.0.2 and jailbreak?

The firmware I downloaded early today was: iPhone3,1_4.0.1_8A306_Restore

As thats the version firmware which was on my phone.

So maybe I need to download the 4.0.2 firmware??

Basically I'd like to be able to jailbreak.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,585 ✭✭✭✭guil

yeah get either 4.0.2 or 4.1

Ok thanks very much for helping me out. I've been at this for a few hours so head is a little fuzy.

I presume I put the iphone in DFU mode to do the restore like above?

Hopefully will be able to jailbreak as I'd alot of stuff on the phone from cydia.
