    Heya,
I think i made a balls of 4th year and i dont think i'll get the grades i want in the upcoming exams. I was just wondering how many modules are you allowed to repeat in 4th year to get a better grade?
I will be taking 6 subjects worth 5 credits each which i am doing exams in.
    Any information would be great
    Thanks!

I'd say that step 1 is to not even think about this until you've seen your results.

For now you just need to concentrate on the exams, I'm sure you'll surprise yourself :)

You can repeat up to 15 credits (so that would be 3 of your modules) for a better grade in final year without losing the honours status of your degree.

I agree with lemansky though, just focus on doing your best in the exams first. You might not even have to repeat any of them :)

Do you mean repeating the hole year or just the 15 credits in August?

I messed up (ie failed) two modules in January exams last year (my 4th year) and I was ripping as I had paid and planned to go off for a J1 in the summer. I got worried that I would have to repeat the hole year so I just worked my ass of for the second semester and managed to get a 2.1 on average for that semester. Went off the America and came home at the start of August, moved back to Maynooth and studied my ass off again and managed to get my grades up by 50% in each module I failed, I repeated a module I got 52% first time just to help myself get a better grade and got my 2.1.

Now repeating final year is a bit messed up as I "know" 3 guys (well I knew one the other two did fourth year with me) who did it.
Two of them, just repeated what ever module they failed/wanted to and didnt do the final year project again. So they had a much more manageable 4th year then the rest of us had.
Then one guy who was the year above me had to repeat every single module including the final year project.

So not sure what the story is but best to talk to your course director or head of dept as they will be able to tell you more.

But what I would say is just work your ass off now, then come June worry about it.

    You can:

    (a) Repeat up to 15 credits worth of exams in August I.e the exams of modules that add up to 15 credits

    (b) Repeat up to 15 credits of modules the following year, either internally or externally. Whether you can repeat any given module externally is at the discretion of the department. For example, if a module has any marks going for attendance, or is lab-based, you couldn't do it externally.

Repeating externally means that you hand up assignments and sit the exams, but do not attend lectures. You don't have to pay the registration fee and and the cost per module is significantly less.

    (c) In extenuating circumstances, a student may repeat the entire year of modules. This usually means that you need a sick note for the entire year, plus actual proof you were sick. For example, dates of regular doctor or hospital visits, results of blood tests, the paperwork involved, etc. Not necessary all of it but more to prove that you were ill. More than a single sick note basically.

    (d) You MIGHT be able to still defer the second semester for another year. But I'm honestly not sure. Also that would mean paying the 'Student Contribution' next year again.

Email vicepresident@nuimsu.com and ask Liz, the SU Welfare Officer, to talk you through your options. She knows, like, everything and is *unbelievably* helpful.

I've been working really hard and intend to keep that up. I think im just a bit over stressed tbh, last year was a great year for me academically wise, i came 7th in my year out of a total of 54 in one subject and 9th out of 53 in another. I also managed to get a UREKA scholarship aswell.

My average has been a first class honours in my two main degree subjects since second year, im just very nervous about how i could maintain that for 4th year.

Basically i was very studious, had lots of willpower in 3rd year and then somewhere between the summer of 3rd and 4th year i discovered drinking/going out. The result was that i went out in 4th year a lot more than any 4th year should of done.

I also didnt do great in my lab project first semester because i was constantly tired. I'm a commuter and an average day for me would start at 6 am and end at around 11 or 12pm. Now i did get a bit of cop on towards the end and got the head down a bit and i know i have already obtained a first in a 5 credit module.

I have been studying over xmas and i did study the material from lectures as i got it i.e had near perfect attendance and wrote out and organized the material on a day to day basis.

In 4th year science is it enough to do the lecture notes +the journals that lecturers post on moodle? For one module i have read all the papers the lecturer has written and i hope to use these in exam and for another subject i have just been studying the prescribed text book. I honestly feel like i havent been doing enough, from subjects i did obtain firsts in, i know its all about 1. Understanding 2. The lecture notes and 3. Outside reading, so i hope im on the right track.
