No crime, no politics, no murders, no accidental deaths.

Yesterday in Croatia, a huge smiley face was on the front page of their main newspaper, and politics and crime were banished and they made the decision to only publish 'good news' for one day.

The paper published stories about the rescue of a trapped dog, a hairdresser who cuts orphans' hair for free and businessmen who defied the financial crisis.
The executive editor of 24 Sata, Alen Galovic, argues that 2010 was depressing and the good news edition “brings a little light and a bit of hope.” So, despite a political crisis crippling Zagreb in which the ex-prime minister is accused of corruption, there was nothing but positivity throughout 24 Sata.

Galovic says the appointment of new ministers and the seizure of paintings from an ex-prime minister suspected of corruption were being ignored for the day.

So, if an Irish newspaper decided to do the same for the day, would you buy it?

Does society focus too much on bad news?

Do you wish the media would focus more on 'Good News' stories? 55 votes

Sounds like something which would put a smile on my face if I saw it. Everytime I read the newspaper, I get angry and frustrated either by the story or wondering who would be interested in reading this pointless piece of journalism, mainly something to do with celebrities.

I read a very wise thing somewhere once. Something like: Perish the day that the good things in life become NEWS.

    There's more good than bad.

That's why bad makes the news.

    Think about it...

I think this is a great idea.
I love the way TV3 news sometimes ends with a silly story, animal being born in a zoo etc.

"Pete" is a pseudonym, the 'Outlaw' bit is real though.

It would be good news if the Indo stopped publishing anything every day.:pac:

I'd buy it for a day - but it mght get a bit tiring for longer than that and end up like the site below:

    http://www.goodnewsonly.com/

We're all part of the "Bad News" problem - as it's those stories that get people talking. Think of conversations you or - more likely - your parents had over the Christmas break. Who died, who's sick etc. etc....

Doesnt Ray Darcy do "the good news" or something every Friday? People text in good news stories from their lives and they read loads out. It was enjoyable the few times I heard it

On a similar note, the media should ban the word Garda, Gardai or Police for a 24 hour period. :p

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,879 ✭✭✭Coriolanus

I dunno, the good news that would be reported is the kind of thing that'd have zero relevance for most people in germs of material effect on their lives.
War, politics etc all have real, if usually time delayed effects on our day to day life.
War in the middle east? Higher petroleum prices ettc.

Would be nice if the free morning metro and healrd am papers did it, but I think we're meant to be kept scared and angry.

Everything I don't like is either woke or fascist - possibly both - pick one.

Absolutely! - Fear sells and fear-mongering is the best PR there is. Lets take those Murdoch robots at Sky News, the winter freeze dissipates and the big thaw kicks. Damn what are they to do, happiness might return to the populous and they can'y have that. Oh wait a second......Lets go for SWINE FLU the Return!!!! that will terrorise them and generate lots of 'fear'. On the reality side, swine flu is only reaching a seasonal peak like all other influenza type viruses. It actually didn't go away, but don'ttell Sky News that because they need to push doom onto the ignorant masses.

I'd be happy if the word "recession" and any talk of the economy were banned for one day across all media.

    One can only dream

I wouldn't like to see the suppression of bad news stories generally in order to run fluffy kitten stories but I do get tired of the constant reporting of smaller stories not in the national interest that involve gory deaths, court cases, misfortune and the like.

I don't get the Indo, they appear to sit on the fence when it comes to FF/Greens, they allow eoin Harris to spin things from the FF side, then they they to make out they are just another independent newspaper.
I frankly don't trust that paper and thats the crux of the matter.

The papers are always full of good news its just the way you interprete it, like for an example - Scumbag coke head overdoses and dies named Mr. Ryan or something - I as ecstatic hearing that

Gerry Ryan wasn't a "scumbag" but even if he was, for anyone's death to make you feel "ecstatic" is kinda sad tbh.

As well as the latest buzz word, 'cuts', which was preceded by 'epidemic' and 'crisis'.

Only two people that chose that it wasn't as simple as a 'Yes' or 'No' in the Poll Options and that that they would explain why, have done so.

    So, let's be having ya!

I'd like to see newspapers just report the news, without any spin, political bias or agenda of some sort.

This of course, will never happen, which is why I choose not to buy them.

And TV3 news is complete sh*t... it's tabloid TV with the odd fluffy kitten.

I hate good news, it's like reading some cringe worthy chick-flick novel.

If they could just report the unbiased facts then I'd be happy enough. I can deal with the mental trauma that comes with hearing bad news.

I would like it if they had a bit of a balance but it seems people thrive on bad news and negativity. Case in point: R&R being much more busy than Sunshine Lollipops :(
