    Hey folks,

I hope this is not posted somewhere else or that im in the wrong section.

I wanted to do a quick survey about garda checkpoints over the christmas period.

Basically, have you been stopped by the garda while driving over the christmas period?

Did you meet a garda checkpoint over the christmas period? 18 votes

Went through one on northside of halfpenny bridge about 10 minutes ago. Is it just me or are the female gardai getting hotter?

I got stopped on the street for looking 'suspicious' a few days ago but that doesnt count so, no.

Nope, there was a lot of ice on the roads up until recently though and I don't think they would have a checkpoint in such conditions. If there was ever an accident as a result then they'd be slaughtered for it

The bad weather probably stopped the checkpoints from happening.

    I don't believe they're allowed pull on ice/frost?

But, I haven't met a check point in a very long time, have no particular wish to either. Nothing wrong, I just don't enjoy the experience.

    I suspect it's just you.

I didn't see one checkpoint in December and I drive a lot.

I also had a Garda car tailgate me for around 10 miles this evening.. the fucker was about 2 metres off my bumper the whole time. Dunno where the gimp learned how to drive.

This reminds me, I really should tax my car...

Same here.. well, the old one anyway. I was driving it a lot during the snow - didn't want to have an accident in the "good car".

Hadn't driven the old one since the thaw & went to drive it to the shops yesterday... battery had died, so I jumped it, but when i tried to drive off, it wouldn't move - it was as if the handbrake was still on.

So I checked under the wheels - nothing blocking them, so I floored it & heard a huge cracking sound as big lumps of crud / grit fell off the axles and wheels. Fecked the brakes up too - there must be tonnes of the crap between the pads & the discs.

Will have to take off the wheels tomorrow & give them a good clean.

So much for the recommended two second rule. I wonder what would have happened if you tailgated them? Pepper spray and a cell?

Nope, not a one. Thought maybe New Years eve I'd see one coming home at about 2:30/3:00 am (y'know, when all the drunk drivers would be most likely to be driving) but alas, no!

My NCT is up, best book it in and cross my fingers.

Oh and seen no checkpoints at all this year, which is good - seen as my NCT is up :)

I'd like to know what they'd say if you needed to brake hard, say for that invisible dog that just ran out in front of you?

Living in Cork and over the past few weeks have been across to Wexford, up to Dublin, over to Clare .... and not even seen a check-point - nevermind being pulled up at one.

    Christmas blitz me arse

I was driving about quite a lot over the Christmas holidays and not once did I see a Garda checkpoint, even late at night!

Mind you, I was quite pissed most of the time, so prob missed/failed to see lots of other things too!

Drove home late most nights in the weeks before Christmas and after but never saw one checkpoint.

I've done a lot of driving over the past few weeks and a fair deal of it was late at night and early in the morning. And not once have a seen a checkpoint. And i've been on routes i've seen a them a good few times in the past. Come to think of it i've seen very few Garda cars out on the road recently.

Apparently they always avoid running checkpoints in icy conditions. I'm not 100% sure why - perhaps it's because there's less road users, perhaps it's to avoid adding an additional hazard to dangerous roads, perhaps it's because they want their cars free to respond to dangerous road conditions and accidents.

Not a sign of one, I have only come across one checkpoint in over a year and the one I came on could easily have been avoided if needed.

I'm yet to come across a checkpoint and I'm driving 6 days a week at various times for the past 5 years.

You could see the checkpoint from a fair bit away and there were roads you could have turned down before reaching it if for some reason or other you wanted to avoid the checkpoint.

Haven't seen a checkpoint over the Xmas period. I did get stopped by a Garda though, to ask would I tow their Fiesta up a slight hill that they were struggling on during the snow.

I didn't vote. A lone garda checked my tax, never as much as looked at me nor came particularly close to the the car. It was the middle of the afternoon and on a "slow" road. I never passed through an alcohol checkpoint or what I would consider a "proper" checkpoint.
