VW Golf 1.2 TSI or 1.4 TSI

After a bit of research I am planning on buying a Golf TSI. Inititally I thought I would get the 1.2 TSI 105 BHP. Toke one for a drive and I thought it was grand.

Did a bit of a search on the web and I got conflicting views on the 1.2.

I wouldn't mind going for the 1.4 TSI 122 BHP but its an extra €2,730. Also its in Tax Band C so an extra €150/year. But it also means I can't scrap my current car against it - needs to be in A/B. Therefore I would have to sell it privately.

I was just wondering does anyone have feedback on the performance of a 1.2 versus a 1.4? I do very low mileage with very small motorway useage. Would I be better off with a 1.2?

given the circumstances, id go for the 1.2, you could be waiting months for a private sale.

15bhp isint all that much in the difference.

Thinking of the same later in the year, but it'll definitely be the 1.4 TSI (or second hand 1.6 diesel) for me. Coming from a 170BHP car I want to keep a reasonable amount of power. I advise to test drive the 1.4 and see how it compares. (let us know!)

Why can't you scrap yours against the 1.4?

it also may be possible to get the 1.2 tsi remapped to be more powerful and/ or economical than the 1.4

The 1.4 TSI petrol falls into Tax Band C.

When scrapping your old car for a new car it has to be for a Tax Band A or B car.

The 1.6 TDI diesel is in Tax Band A. The 1.2 TSI petrol is in Tax Band B. Both of these are OK but the 1.4 TSI is not.

    That's the manual 1.4

If you can stretch to it, an extra €1000 will get you the 1.4TSI with the DSG auto box (which has better MPG than the manual) which is in tax band B and has €156/year tax too. You can scrap your car against it aswell. That's what I have my eye on. Worth a look, and test drive at least.

Cheers for pointing that out. I didn't spot that the 1.4 DSG is in Tax Band B. Its got me thinking.

The price difference between the 1.2 TSI 105 BHP and the 1.4 TSI 122 BHP DSG is €3,740 (after delivery and metallic charges.) Might be too steep for me.

Plus fuel consumption is supposedly better on the 1.2. I only do town driving with a small amount of motorway. Maybe the 1.2 would suffice but the 1.4 DSG would be nice! :D

BTW which holds their value better: manual or automatic?

Can see the dsg proving more desirable if they show decent reliability long term. Plus autos are becoming more popular in mainstream cars too

Im not really adding any value to your actual question but given that in the other thread you said:

    - You do nearly no mileage (5k per year)
    - You are obsessed with Golfs :P

Why not buy a Used MK5 GTI Golf? Clearly fuel costs are a non-factor in your life as you just dont drive far enough for it to matter and why not get a really good Golf as opposed these bottom-feeder models?
You only live once man! Prolly even save you money too vs this puny mega boost little petrols over the long haul.

PS: In 10 years (what you stated you will keep the car for) who cares on the Residuals (not to say the GTI has none)? You will be talking low low value old fossil fuel car in the heady days of 2021 regardless what you buy, TDI or TSI, manual or DSG. What is sure though is noone is going to be fantasizing about a 1.2 or 1.4litre Golf way out there, the GTI at least has some story to it.

Next time you're talking to the dealer ask him if he has a
1.4 tsi dsg that u can test drive, it would be interesting to see the difference real-world with the extra bhp.

Can I ask how much did the dealer quote u for delivery+related charges and metallic paint? Those I've forgotten to budget for!

For a 1.2 TSI 105 BHP CL, I was quoted €1,130 for delivery and metallic paint. The metallic paint is €550 I think.

OP, have you looked at the Skoda Octavia? Basically the same car as the Golf underneath but costs less. The 1.2 TSi Elegance hatchback is under €20k excluding delivery, metalic paint and before scrappage allowance.

The DSG version is an extra €2k but both versions are in Tax Band B. Elegance model is also better equipped than the Golf Comfortline.
