Hoping someone will be able to help me with my dilemma.... locked the car with the alarm key (i.e set the alarm) which i then lost. i have the spare key which doesn't have the function to disable the alarm. Obviously if i open the door using that key the alarm will go off. Anyone know how long it is likely to go off for, will i be able to deactivate it? or is there are more permanent method to disable the alarm? Relucatant to just open the car with it and risk annoying all my neighbours with a persistant alarm until the battery dies. All suggestions appreciated!!

try open the door with the key, pop the bonnet disconnect the battery for 5 mins or so, reconnect and that should do the trick but be quick as dont wanna piss off the neighbours :D

Really depends on how sophisticated the alarm is in the car. Some will continue to go off until the battery dies, others will go off for 5 mins, go silent and go off for 5 mins again until it is disarmed by the fob. Most aftermarket alarms have a manual override either via a small key that is put into the alarm control unit under the bonnet or somewhere else in the car where the installer placed it.

Just be aware even if you have the key to get into the car, it may not start the car even with the alarm sounding as the alarm maybe tied into the car's immobiliser. The alarm may need to be switched off/disabled to allow the car to be started.

dont most good alarms have their own seperate battery so that if the battery is disconnected it still rings for 'x' amount of time.

also if the alarm is connected to the immobiliser, even if you open the car and get the alarm to shut up it still wont start.

Yep I would imagine so, a bit pointless if all a would be car thief had to do is pop the bonnet and disconnect the battery to shut it off.

i did this on a honda crx worked just fine its worth a try whats the worst that could happen  as for having second battery for the alarm not too sure about that dont seem much point in that. id give it a try and worst comes to worst and the alarm stays on when you reconnect the battery well just leave it disconnected until you get a new fob from your dealer :D

Thanks for the replies everyone. I can't be sure but i'm fairly certain its a manufacturers alarm. Really not sure what to do. I'm trying to avoid having to get a mechanic call out. Just realised this might not be the correct forum for this post - not 'advanced' query enough - sri.

this place should be called argue.ie not boards why dont people just think of ways to help the person in question instead of pointing out the floors in other peoples answers, if we all used our time to help out the world would be a lot nicer place :D:D:D:D

Unlikely but still possible. Most folks pay very little attention to alarms these days anyway unless they are going off for hours and they tend to be annoyed why it isn't being switched off rather than why it is going off in the first place. But that is a different subject.

You don't know if the alarm has it's own battery/back up battery. I'm just telling you the worst that can happen.

car alarms, just like house alarms have a battery built into them so even if the main power supply is disconnected it will still work.

otherwise, it would be a seriously flawed item

Snip what wires? Where? Should the OP just go snipping random wires in his/her car?

People are helping, they're pointing out the risks involved if the OP were to follow your advice. No one is arguing with you.

1Check for user error. Consult the owner's manual for directions on how to turn the car alarm on and off.
    2
Put the key in the ignition and try to start the car. On many systems this will shut off the alarm.
    3
Find the alarm's fuse. It may be in the fuse box, usually located below the steering wheel to the left. Many cars also have other fuse boxes (sometimes three or even more) inside the engine compartment. If it's an aftermarket alarm (installed after the car left the factory), you'll find the fuse under the hood, usually on a wire connected to the positive battery terminal.
    4
Locate the fuse that has the alarm label. You should find a fuse diagram on the lid of the fuse box. An aftermarket alarm won't have any label. Don't worry; removing the wrong fuse won't cause any damage. If you pull out a fuse and the alarm stays on, put that fuse back in and try another.
    5
Pull the alarm fuse with the fuse puller (sometimes found in the fuse box) or a pair of needle-nose pliers. Sometimes you can remove a fuse using your fingers.
    6
As a last resort, disconnecting the battery's negative terminal will stop the alarm, but it will also keep your car from starting

I would guess that if you put in the spare key in the drivers door and turn it to the unlock position it should switch it off. Some cars need the remote to set the alarm on and off only, and others can be set with the key.By the way the mk 6 fiesta can be done by the latter.
