    Hey,

Start of a new year so I thought it'd be a good time to make a thread like this. What films are people looking forward to the most in 2011?

Personally, I can't wait to see Paul in February, I'm a sucker for the Simon Pegg/Nick Frost combo. The Hangover 2, The Smurfs and that new muppets movie are all on my radar as well.

Whatever Disnex/Pixar have produced for the following year I look forward to :).
In this case Cars 2, Despite cars not being one of their best for me.

In the immediate future, True Grit and Black Swan are interesting.

There are new movies by J. J. Abrams (Super 8 - with Spielberg), Terence Malick (The Tree of Life) and Greg Mottola (Paul - with Pegg and Frost). Fincher has a remake of The Girl in the Dragon Tattoo coming out. Moon's Duncan Jones has a new sci-fi, Source Code. The trailer didn't impress me, but I'll keep an eye out for reviews. David Cronenberg's latest (A Dangerous Method) looks interesting.

In terms of more mindless popcorn stuff, I liked Richie's Sherlock Holmes and there's a sequel on the way in December. Mission Impossible 4 is directed by Brad Bird (The Iron Giant, The Incredibles). Schneider's latest eye candy, Sucker Punch, might be fun. I'm dubious about the Conan remake, but I'll keep an eye out in case it defies my expectations. There are three major superhero movies - The Green Lantern, Thor and Captain America - any of which could be good. Cowboys & Aliens, from Iron Man's Favreau, has a great cast and some buzz about it.

A few odds and ends: Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy has a great cast, as does Margin Call (interesting premise too). The Rum Diaries sees Johnny Depp revisit his Hunter S. Thompson impression. Priest looks like entertaining trash.

Cowboys and Aliens looks pretty good, I'll probably end up watching every superhero movie out no matter how good/bad they are.
    Harry Potter can fock off.
Hopefully Super 8 lives up to the build up it's getting along with Battle Los Angeles-give me a smash em up blockbuster for a popcorn night at the movies.

The Fighter will probably be watched over the weekend. Also hearing good things about True Grit so I'll be checking it out also-love a good western.

so many, but ill state right now that by the 31st of december there will be a queue of people saying that 2011 was a sh1te year in film:D

anyway, im kinda looking forward to Thor, not really asssured as im not to well aquainted with the director so i think ill just go in blind, with only a view that it should be a good movie, im gonna avoid any talk about it and judge for myself,

Your Highness looks like a nice bit fun for midyear, with natalie portman, zooey deschennel, and james franco, all coming off some good films the last year or two, but at the same time danny mcbride is in it and i hate that ***ing retard, and also the director of eastbound and down is directing this also, so i will be paying a lot of attention to reviews before (if) i go see this,

i dunno if i wanna go see The Girl With the Dragoon Tatoo, i really like the original trilogy so i dunno if i want to taint them films, but the draw of david fincher behind the camera running things is such a big draw,

Battle: Los Angeles, noting really drawing me to this other than the great trailer i saw for it, and one or two names, not big just known names, with the world invasion added to the title outside of the US, i do wonder will they make this a series, cause i think were long overdue a good alien invasion series,

True Grit I cant wait to see, good westerns have been trickling out in the last few years, the trailer looks cool and Bridges is always watchable.

Battle: Los Angeles could be fun if they pull it off right, not like the risible Skyline.

Cars 2 I'm meh about, as much as I love Pixar the trailer looks awful.

A few things to (possibly) look forward to:

Cameron Crowe's next film is supposed to be out this year. It's called We Bought a Zoo and is about a family that, uh, buys a zoo. Matt Damon and Scarlett Johansson are attached apparently. It's based on some guy's memoir. I hope this happens - I miss Crowe. Elizabethtown wasn't very good, but it wasn't nearly as bad as some people made out. Certainly not bad enough to kill Crowe's career, which it seems it almost did. Then again if this is as bad as it sounds...

Spielberg's next, War Horse, is due at the end of the year as well. It appears to be a kiddie flick about a boy and his horse, set during WWI. I think I speak for everyone when I say: please, please, please - let it not be a CGI horse!

As already mentioned, Super 8, written and directed by J.J. Abrams, is out in the summer. All we know is that it is set during 1979 and is a tribute to Spielberg sci-fi films from that era. It was a written by a committee led Spielberg and Abrams and was originally rumoured to be a sequel to Cloverfield. Hmmm. What could possibly go wrong?

I'm not expecting much from it, but the Straw Dogs remake with James Marsden and Kate Bosworth should be out this year as well. This was shot in 2009 and has been sitting on the shelf ever since which is never a good sign, but the script is very close to the original, just transplanted to America. Even if it sucks (which is likely), it will hopefully spark a reevaluation of Peckinpah's 1971 original, which is a classic imo.

I'm kinda curious to see Gibson playing himself in The Beaver. Actually I think Gibson has been getting a hard time. I'd love to see him make a comeback. Trailer here. Be warned though - it's one of those whole-film-condensed-into-3-minutes-type trailers.

Isn't the next Mission Impossible out this summer as well? Oh and Transformers 3 - at least we have an early contender for Worst Film 2011. :p

Hangover 2, hopefully be seeing it in when I'm in Thailand this summer :pac:

Black Swan - Because I think Its going to be a great movie. A mixture of ALL About Eve and The Red Shoes while at the same time being totally psychotic. Can't wait. The fact that its set in the world of ballet I hope wont put people off.

Isn't the next Mission Impossible out this summer as well?

Its December 2011 on IMDB. I am looking forward to it. Big fan of Cruise.
I read a while ago that Brave was being released in the summer. Its a fairytale from Pixar. Sounds poor, but you cant knock them.
The Lincoln Lawyer was a good read, but I would say it will transfer a lot better to film than Connelly's Bosch Novels, so am quite excited about that one.

The one I am most intruigued about is The Adjustment Beareau. I think it could be the film this year.

Early nomination for dud of the year goes to the smurfs movie.

Well, there's the comic book movies that are out.Thor and Captain America being the big two for me.The Green Lantern doesn't look great, but I'll check it out.

Hoping X-Men First Class is a return to form, I like Vaughn and I love Fassbender, so I'm hoping something good will happen.

Hoping Deathly Hallows Part 2 is better than Part 1.Will have to check out Source Code.I loved Moon,so hoping for more of the same.

I quite like Franco and obviously I like Portman and Deschanel so Your Highness mightn't be too bad.Soderbergh's new film Contagion with Damon and Cotillard might be good. The plot sounds crappy, but with the talent behind it,I'm hopeful.Likewise with Scorcese's new film,Hugo Cabret, the fact that it's in 3D turns me off it though.

Cowboys and Aliens, Rockwell is in it.Rockwell is epic.Whilst I liked the original,I'm looking forward to the remake of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. It's Fincher so I'm hopeful he'll do well with it.

Cars 2.It's Pixar and they've never let me down.

Abrams new Super 8.It's Abrams,it's Spielberg and I know nothing else about it.It could be awesome.

I have to say The Hangover 2, first one was great but I don't have high hopes for this.Could be a lame cash-in, or it could be great.

THE MUPPETS!!! This is what I'm looking forward to most.Amy Adams,Paul Rudd,Zach Galifianakis, Jason Segal and Emily Blunt. With Segal and Stoller writing, if it's as good as Forgetting Sarah Marshall, and I'm expecting it to be better, it'll be one of the funniest films of the year.

Others that I'm hopeful for are Conan the Barbarian,The Thing,Pirates of the Caribbean,Scream 4,Transformers and Sucker Punch, but I'm not expecting them to be good,so if they are,it's a nice bonus.

Mostly Melancholia. I want to see what Lars von Trier ends up doing with Kirsten Dunst, given his previous record with Bjork in "Dancer in the Dark" and Nicole Kidman in "Dogville".

Well, there are the Oscar contenders in The Fighter, Black Swan and 127 hours. The Fighter because I'm a fan of Boxing, as well as of Marky Mark and Bale, so really looking forward to it. Black Swan because I like all involved: Portman, Kunis, Ryder and Cassell. 127 hours because I dig James Franco, I think that he's consistently improving as an actor. The only good thing in Spiderman 3 and brilliant in Milk (criminally looked over in that awards season).

True Grit because again I liked all involved: the Cohens, Bridges, Damon and Brolin. The young actress seems very good too judging from the trailer.

Then there are there are the Superhero films. I *really* want Thor and Captain America to achieve success, it's a very important year for Marvel Studios. Both films seem to have a solid cast, so hopefully things work out. Then there's Green Lantern, I want WB/DC to achieve success beyond Batman. Not too confident about this film though it has to be said. Nearly forgot X-Men First Class, again, judging by the cast and director it has every chance of succeeding.

Speaking of super hero films, I'm looking forward to this.

Might get a limited theatrical release in these parts.

I'm hoping the new Ghibli/Haruhi films will be given some kind of cinema release this year.

Plus you can't go wrong with new Terrence Malick/Coen Bros.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,153 ✭✭✭everdead.ie

The new pirates of the Caribbean I've really enjoyed all the previous installments and I just plain old like the characters and the setting which apart from master and commander movie Rustle Crow did a few years ago is rarely explored.

Xmen: first class and Transformers because I'm 100% a nerd and love that stuff

Cannot wait for Thor and Captain america because in my opinion Marvel Studios hasn't done wrong so far and looking forward to seeing how both those tie in to the Avengers too,

Also be interesting to see how X men first Class turns out too could be great or could be horrible

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,405 ✭✭✭gizmo

    Definitely Hanna at the moment.

Does I Saw The Devil count too? It was released in South Korea last year but won't get my hands on the Bluray for another while.

I'm looking forward to Thor, True Grit and yes, Paul is going to rock...

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 374 ✭✭pocketvenus

Black Swan I am looking forward to seeing have heard great reviews about it and I enjoy a good physcological drama / thriller.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 I cannot wait to see as even though I enjoyed the first film the 2nd half of the book contains all the action etc.

Also am very interested to see Water for Elephants - I love the book and was a bit dubious when I heard it was going to be made into a film but with Reese Whiterspoon and Christoph Waltz attached it seems like they have put alot of care into it. Only point where it may be an issue is the casting of Robert Pattinson as lead role. I have seen his other work and he is talented but think the whole Twlight thing may overshadow this role.

Finally The Hangover 2 if it is as good as orginial - well enough said.

I'm looking forward to James Gunn's new film Super it has Rainn Wilson as a superhero. Ellen Page, Kevin Bacon and Liv Tyler and some Slither alum Gregg Henry, Michael Rooker and Nathan Fillion also in the cast.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,081 ✭✭✭ziedth

Has to be the "the fighter" for me too,

I'm a big big Bale fan, Love boxig and Walberg is always at least watchable.

I think Captain America is the big one for me, the screen shots I've seen and the concept art look brilliant. I'm delighted they decided to set the movie in world war 2, I always like the idea of Cap as an ordinary soldier who was given this great power to turn the tide of the war and his portrayal as a war hero.

I'm also looking forward to Cowboys and Aliens in a big way since I saw the trailer, they seem to be going for a serious tone and are seem to be trying to make a John Ford style western that just happens to have aliens in it, could be the film of the summer if it lives up to the trailers.

Thor and Green Lantern I want to be excited about but I'm not getting my hopes up especially in the case of green lantern.

Can't wait to see True Grit either!

Scream 4 anyone ??? Since I've seen the first 3 . you kinda have ta go to the 4th one (unless you consider them rubbish)
Also the new Fast and Furious . think its called Fast Five. (Vin diesel, FULL STOP)
And defiantly JJ Abrams, Super 8 ! The teaser trailer for this just looks to good, Kinda spooky but worth a look.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 241 ✭✭AndyKiely

True Grit - Honestly, Jeff Bridges is one of the best actors going, gives his all in every performance and I think he can do justice to a great role played by John Wayne.

Paul - Simon Pegg and Nick Frost. Love them, love all their collaberations and I think it is going to be great for a laugh.

Pirates of the Carribbean: On Stranger Tides - First three were great, bar some bits in the last one that let me down slightly, the performaces of Johnny Depp and Geoffrey Rush are great, the cast is only getting better with Ian McShane.

The Fighter - My little man crush on Mark Wahlberg is bringing me to this

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 158 ✭✭geoffraffe

For the last while every new year in the film industry has been the same. Dec - Jan is when hollywood brings out their version of the 'arty' films for oscar season. In reality there hasn't been many good original films that have deserved the awards compared to decades gone by (I know there's been some good film but the majority have been meh). Summer has been the time when the Blockbusters come out and then disappoint. The end of the year shows a lot of also rans.

I read an interview with Neil Jordan recently and he was talking about how many people believe that the film industry is dead and how all the good writing is happening in TV. It's hard not to agree with this. My point here is that I'm not looking forward to too many films in 2011, but I am looking forward to seeing how the film industry as a whole is going to change over the next decade. Is it a dying media, or are they brave enough to drastically change the formula and actually have the balls to go back to interesting, original ideas that lead to films that we cherish for life?

    Here's hoping.

    A Dangerous Method

A film based on psychiatrists Carl Jung and Sigmund Freud. Considering it is directed by David Cronenberg, who Jung and Freud would have a field day with, it’ll surely be an intriguing story, top that off with a cast in the form of Michael Fassbender, Vincent Cassel and Cronenberg regular Viggo Mortensen. Really looking forward to this one.

    The Darkest Hour

Apparently this is going for a ‘28 days later’ take on the alien invasion theme. To be honest, and to paraphrase ‘Monsters Vs Aliens,’ I’m sick of seeing America getting attacked yet again, so Russia being attacked sounds refreshing. We have to wait until August to see this one though.

    The Guard

Anything with Brendan Gleeson in the lead role (like ‘the General’ or ‘In Bruges’) is an automatic must see for me. Fingers crossed its good.

    Hobo with a Shotgun

Rutger Hauer as a hobo...with a shotgun. say no more.

This, by one of my favourite directors of all time.

Cannot wait. Iniarittu's films always have beautiful, instense lighting. And I like the way he constructs the telling of separate stories that are somehow intertwined.

Not long now thankfully, out on the 28th.

Looking forward to this, too. It's his first film without writer Guillermo Arriaga, though, so I'm not necessarily expecting the same kind of fractured narrative (and I tend to deliberately avoid trailers if possible, so I know very little about this film except that Iñárritu is directing and Bardem is acting...)

Pirates of the Carribean I loved the first one but thought they got worse, I had little interest till I heard that Orlando Bloom & Kiera Knightly weren't in it.

Scream 4 cause the first one was quality and even two and three were watchable.

Hangover 2 Like the cast and surely will get a few laughs out of it.

The inbetweeners movie anyone who likes the TV show will know why.

Superhero Movies more often then not they are at least worth a trip to the cinema.

I could name a few more bit I'll leave it there.

Cant wait to see Sucker Punch. Heard about it last March so Ive been waiting this long to see it, really hope its not a let down. Visually it looks like 300/Sin City, which are in my top favorite movies. Here is a link to it:

I'm cautiously looking forward to Battle: LA, X-Men Fist Class and transformers 3. All have the potential to be fun sci-fi blockbuster fare... or total rubbish. Here's hoping we get the former.
Think I'm going to see Drive Angy 3D on Wednesday. It looks like fun nonsense and I hear the 3D effects actuall help the fil for a change.
Also, if they make it to general release (or even limited release) this year, I'm hoping the likes of Charlie Casanova, Portrait of a Zombie and the Nixer will all be good. It would be nice tose the Irish indie scene get some much needed recognition.

I'm looking forward to seeing Caves of Forgotten Dreams and A Dangerous Method. The reasons why is that they are directed by Werner Herzog and David Cronenberg. Need I say anymore
