    Alright men,

I have a problem with the engine in my saab. The engine light has come on inside the dash and a strange noise can be heard from inside the engine block. A sort of put, put sound. I have a video here. It was a bit dark at the time.

Anyone know what could be wrong?

    Regards,

    Paul

sounds nearly like the bottom end gone....have you checked to see if there is oil in there?

Cracked exhaust manifold? Leaking injector seals? Hard to tell really. Is it down on power or is fuel consumption worse lately?

The power and consumption are normal, and sometimes when the car is warmed up the noise will disappear and the warning light go out. The problem started last week.

time to stick a code reader on it if the engine light has come on. Do you know anyone with an OBD II/canbus code reader. Very handy thing to have they are around E60 on ebay

Would park it up until diagnosis....especially it being a turbo diesel

Sounds like a leaky manifold but better to be safe than sorry

It does sound like an injector passing compression...have alook around the base of each injector and see if there is any black carbon substance.
I don't think a leaking injector would bring on an engine light tho...
Maybe post your location and someone here may have op com to read the fault(s)....:)

Hiya, this sounds like 1 or 2 of your injector seals gone.

    The injector seals have pitted.

Strip some of the engine cover and if you find black sooty deposits inside then you know it is the seals.

When you run the air intake on fresh air is the car smelling of smoky unburnt diesel.

    Hi dmmraad,

I have stripped the engine covers and their are soot deposits around. Looks like this could be the problem.

Can the car still be driven until I get the problem sorted and is it an expensive job?

Thanks to everyone for their time.

    Paul.

    Paul.

I drove mine for a few months, car got smellier so we couldn't use the intake at all, power dropped off a little bit, went to NCT and they wouldn't test it, they told me the engine would blow.

I bought the new seals €10 for 4 and then it was 4 hours labour all in to do the job, 2 hours of engine stripping to get the seals out, with me cleaning everything, then 2 hours to put it all back. Changing the seals is only half hour work.

I can recommend a mechanic who will do the job, and he will let you degrease everything that comes out of the engine bay (saves a lot of time), because everything will be coked to death. Bring plenty of gloves, degreaser, cloths, wd40, newspaper, flathead screwdriver to scrape coked dust, and be prepared to get dirty.
