Remap for economy.

    Hi Guys,
quick question coming up! I've a 02 115bhp Seat Alhambra 1.9tdi (PD engine). Around town the mpg is pretty rubbish and on the motorway at 110kph I can squeeze 48mpg out of her as long as there is no unnecessarily brisk acceleration. I do a 130mile round trip daily and driving at 110 is taking time from me that I'd like to get back. If I drive at 120 (150 to 200rpm higher) which I'd much perfer to do, the mpg drops to around 40.

So, I'm thinking of getting a remap for economy. I'd like to get up to 48mpg at 120kph. Anyone here any experience of doing the same and what gains in mpg can be achieved, who would would you recommend and how much did it cost.

    Thanks.
    Torq

P.S. I'm not posting this in the "modified motors" forum as I'm not looking to chip the life out of it, fit staggered 19in rims or coilovers etc, and I think the question would be better answered here.

Can't recommend anyone without your location.

How would an eco map give you better MPG if the gearing isnt changed?

Is it less fuel being put into the cylinders overall?

If you're in Dublin the man to talk to is Joe Power (www.chippedire.com) all the VAG lads swear by him

48mpg for such a large heavy vehicle with a relatively small low power engine is excellent.

A car like that is never going to be good in stop start driving as the engine is constantly working hard to get the weight moving. As for major differences is motorway mpg, the gearing would effect that much more then a remap.

The reason remaps can improve economy is that they give more power, especially on diesels, so the engine doesn't have to work as hard to move the car.

If you want to increase mpg you should be driving slower than 110kph, save yourself 600 euros and drive at 90kph. Also make sure you have decent tires for economy driving.

I think with a car like that, aerodynamic drag is going to be the biggest problem at motorway speeds.

I got my BMW 520d remapped. I would say on average the improvement in fuel consumption is about 8%, I have seen up to 16% gains on longer M50 spins though.

I wouldn't think so. Weight is the problem.

Thanks for the replies so far. Yep she's a big old bus but some of the owners on the Ford galaxy forum are getting high 50's mpg on motorway runs!

Traveling at 90kph is not an option for me. My working day is 12 1/5 hrs including commute as it is and I'm not going to add to it by slowing down even more than I have done so far.

The problem with the car is inclines. On the flat she'll give 50+ mpg at 120kph but any sort of rise in the road and it drops dramatically. I live in Athlone but work in Dublin and it is true to say "up to dublin and down the country" as I get better mpg on the way home.

Idealy if I had more power at 2250rpm (120kmh) the inclines wouldn't cause the problem they do.

It's a great car and beats my previous E46 320d touring on everything except power, mpg and handling (all as expected) but it's spec/extras puts the beemer to shame.

tbh... 48mpg seems pretty good for an MPV. If I drive my C4 GP like a granny I can get 50-55mpg on a run... normally averages 45-50. My brother grumbles that his S-Max rarely tops 40mpg.
