Probably a bit of a stupid question but how would one go about setting up a home network so that myself and my housemates can all share files etc via our wireless internet connection?

Is the wireless internet connection a router or is it that you are using a WISP?

If the former then you already have a LAN and just need to enable some shares on the PCs to allow sharing of files between ye.

Its just a router yeah. How would you enable a share? Like say I want to enable a sharing of my c drive? Or a folder on my desktop?

Right click the folder you want to share, then click the "Sharing" tab, followed by "Advanced Sharing". Tick "Share this folder" and click OK twice. This folder is now shared.

To have the folder appear on the other computer, go into My Computer (on it), and click "Map network drive". In the "folder" box, type \\<compname>\<sharename> - so if the name if the computer you're sharing from was mycomp and the share name (that you specified when creating the share) was movies, you would type \\mycomp\movies - then click Finish and you're done. There will now be a new drive letter (just like C: for the local hard drive) to represent the folder being shared from the other computer.

(PS: to find out the "name" of the computer you're sharing from, go into My Computer, then click "System Properties", it appears there)

(PPS: This assumes Windows 7 - you really should specify what version you're running when asking these types of questions)

Trying to do the same thing, with a standard NTL netgear wireless modem, I'm greyed out though and cant share folders (see attached)

Do I not need to set something up in the control panel under wireless network?

This would be handy in the house, rather than transferring on USB sticks and stuff...

thanks in advance for any help

At the bottom of that dialog, click the "another folder" link, and uncheck the "private" checkbox. Repeat the steps above, and it should work.

(Again, PLEASE always specify what version you're running - you're on XP but you should be telling us that!)
