Hey, I was picking a section for these questions though didn't know where to put so sorry if this is wrong section for it.

    1) Are 17 year olds allowed to stay home alone for 2 weeks while parents are away to Egypt? I mean if I bump into police and they ask where are my parents, and I say in egypt for 2 weeks, would that be ok? I mean as far as I know there isn't really a law about that is there?

    2) If I am a lone at home, and I open doors and guy from TV license comes and asks for TV license, I really have a right not to let him in or refuse to talk to him and say to come back in 2 weeks since I am underage? And if he forces his way into house I can call police can't I? Since I can say I don't know where my parents keep license? I am 17 atm.

    3) If I live in a house which was remade into flats. 10 flats in 1 house. And I ordered Item from Ebay. And it wont fit through a mail box hole. Will they call my doors? and if I don't open will they call some other doors and just ask to open? and leave in stairs room (general hall in your house where all mail is) ?

    Thanks.

    1) yes you can be home alone, Guards won't care at all.

    2) A TV licence inspector will not force his way into your home, just say it's your folks telly and they'll be back in two weeks. If you don't have one he'll just leave a note saying to get one ASAP.

    3) A delivered package would never be left outside your place. If nobody is home or you don't answer in my experience he'll slip a note through the door and tell ya which post office you can pick it up.

If you don't mind me saying OP, I'm getting an odd vibe off your post. Are you ok with being left alone? I've honestly never heard of anyone frightened that a TV Licence inspector will force into their house.

well I am not afraid to be a lone at home, and the only thing I am currenlty afraid of is that inspector since I though it will be like this:

I open door, he asks for license, I say don't have it, he writes out the so called "big fine" like thousand euros or something and calls police or something. But well good to know police and he wont do anything.

    Are you irish?just curious.
The tv license really isnt your problem tbh, its your parents problem and the inspector will completely understand this.
Obviously those cheesy tv license ads are actually working on some people!:D
I presume thats why wouldnt open the door if your getting something from ebay? or are you getting something dodgy?

On another note, I have to say , those tv license guys do really persevere, we kept getting notes in the door while we were out , and one of the lads got a letter, he uses his parents address for absolutely everthing, except the bin. So he can only conclude they got his name from the bin and sent him the letter. We just paid in the end lol.

no I am not Irish. My nationality is Russian, though citizenship is Latvian (EU) so i am legally here :D

    Well nice to know then.
No all I ordered on ebay is:

Gas mask, small scales , and a MSP430 microchip. I think those all are legal to have. So yeah I don't open because of fear for inspector. Well anyways, thanks.

    1) I think you parents have some responsibility towards you as you are under 18 (food and money). But, yea you're fine to live on your own at 17.

    2) I avoided the TV licence inspector for well over a year. If someone calls and says they are updating addresses in the area and they are from "an post" or some other half-baked reason to find out your name, just close the door in their face. Don't be bullied by them, just say "sorry my parents aren't home, call back next week"

    3) They will try to buzz your door and get you to answer. If you're not available they will leave a note saying they attempted delivery and give you the name of the sorting office where you can collect the package. You will need to bring the note and photo ID to pick it up.

It's a bit of a grey area I'd have thought. Even though you're still technically under the care of your parents, it's unlikely social services are going to march in and seize you! Back in the days before students did transition year in school and were that bit older doing their leaving cert, there were plenty of 17 year olds living away from home.

Gas mask, small scales , and a MSP430 microchip

If you already have the flux capacitor, you could travel ahead in time until you are 18, then you will be fully legal and above board and can deal with the license inspector adult-to-adult.

Why don't you just ask your parents to leave the TV Licence out for you when they go away?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,442 ✭✭✭Firetrap

I get the impression that the OP's parents might not have one and he/she is a bit worried that that will cause problems if the inspector calls. Perhaps the TV licence people have written to them already and that is why it's high up in his/her mind.

Young person; worry not; this is Ireland and not a police state.

If you are concerned re callers, simply do not answer the door.

Things are much more relaxed here.

If your big concern is regarding the tv lience explain this to your parents and ask them to get one. I think that you can pay mothly instead of just one payment.

The money would be worth it if otherwise you are going to spend the whole time fretting.

    You can't pay monthly.
    It isn't worth it either.
Once you're on the system they can send you a court summons if you don't renew your licence.

I love how gas mask + small scales doesn't set alarm bells ringing for anyone else!

A teenager at home alone for two weeks conducting some chemistry projects at home is a bit of a recipe for disaster.

they do fo me it was the main thing I noticed,
esp when added the microprocessor which can be used for all sorts of "devices"

Personally I think the other questions were a cheap rouse to find out whether he'll get his deliveries for his potentially dangerous project

I wouldnt be leaving this chap alone for a second TV licience or NOT!!

microchip is for resale. I got it for free using voucher, and I can re-sell it for like 10-20 eur. Considering I got it free I can sell it good.

Gas mask - you will laugh but I just found a cheap one, and since in Dublin there is often a problems with water, you can't always flush toilet. So it's a bad smell. I know it sounds stupid but well why not if it's cheap. It's always good to have a gas mask at home in my opinion. Back in days when I was born in Ukraine every family had to own 1.

Small scales - just though would be good to have ones. I want to make kinda like a liquid that's illuminating when shaked in bottle. Needs something like some fizzy drink, baking soda and forgot other ingredient.

You can. I do, by monthly direct debit, costing €13.33.

These direct debit forms can be downloaded from the AnPost website and the completed one emailed back into them. I do think its worth the inconvenience of having them chase you for €160 usually at exactly the time when loads of other bills happen.

Most people in Ireland get a crate of stella and a few mates and when the parents come home, most of the items in the front room are sold.

Talk about using your time well anyway :p

weirdest thread ive come across in a while

TV licence inspectors, scaring kids since 1980.

But seriously, they rarely come around to houses that have a licence on their database from what 've heard. If they know that house has a valid licence, why waste time coming around?

A friend of mine was visited, as they had only recently gotten a licence and it might not have registered yet. He was able to show a receipt or something that he had paid. All cool.
