Head Gasket went on van driving up from Portlaoish last night, managed to nurse it back to Dublin by stopping off at every second service station along the old road for water. Van has good body, etc 6 months road tax DOE etc. Is it worth fixing and how much should I expect to pay?

Should I just look out for another block or should I just scrap the van.

If you do it yourself it'll cost very little..gasket set and a skim....i'd guess €200 max..garage would prob quote 5-600....

I probably would end up doing it myself, do I need to replace head studs? Water pump, timing belt etc was only replaced last summer.

Who skims heads in South Dublin?

    Cheers.

Yours is the 2.5 I presume if it has a belt? if so the head bolts don't need to be replaced. You will need a full head set and make sure to get the head pressure tested as well as skimmed. also make sure you have found what caused the head gasket failure, as they rarely just go for no reason.

I just checked the oil, after driving approx 60 miles from Portlaois to South Dublin, it is still black, no water contamination. The larger top hoses directly under the filler cap has a 3/4" slit in it where the steam burnt through. I drove about 1/4 mile with engine roasting to get off the M50 so not sure what damage I done. Engine also burns a bit of oil. Ill replace the hose next week and check the system again for leaks before I start ripping things apart.

The simplest thing to do would be to have a pressure test done on the cooling system, this will tell you if you have a leak and a 'sniff' test will tell you if there is any contamination from the combustion chamber in the coolant.
