    In theory.

But each box, unless a clone uses different plugins, api, firmware. There needs to be a compatible MHEG5 engine.

There is Open Source MHEG5 enging for Linux. But needs to be ported to each distinct model of box.

thats great. I wonder if any enthusiasts in the uk have done this already since they use mheg5 for their sat and terrestrial services.

So basically each model of box requires it to be ported to it specifically i.e. one for a vu+ duo, one for a DM800 etc. ?

Unless the models are really the same box in disguise. Yes.

There is about zero demand for a Combo in UK. People will generally either have Freesat or Freeview, except for people using non-UK satellite where MHEG5 is not a priority.

Also Freesat uses non-standard EPG (not MHEG5 or Sky or DVB-EIT) as well as MHEG5.

Actually many TVs and Setboxes run Linux and already have MHEG5, but they are not "open" boxes. I presume by "Linux" boxes you mean ones where the hobbyist can customise Firmware rather than just load it. The so called "open" Linux boxes are usually "open" because more effort has gone into HW and they are relying on the "Community" to finish and debug their software. Hence they are usually boxes either for hobbyist or for those stealing pay TV via Cardsharing and card hacks.
