    You'll find it hard to find an old model 06 rav4 diesel. Most 06 old models are the leftovers from 2005, 2.0 petrol models and the odd 1.8

    OP: consider the 1.8 model as it has economy close to the D-4D 4wd but without the high asking price or the risk of the flywheel going all gooey

    the diesels suffer from problems with the dual mass flywheel which can run into 4 figures to fix, suffer from a few other little gremlins aswell.

    petrol is generally a more reliable option, but it will be more thirsty so running costs would be a tad more.

    1.8 petrol is 2wd as well, so a lot less mechanically complex than the 4wd 2.0 d4d

    Are these probs cos of the 4wd with the dmf? My missus has a 05 2l d4d toyota with no issues yet, touch wood

    im not sure if the problem is directly related to the 4wd system to be honest. you could be lucky.

    Having had the use of a 04 1.8 for a month this time last year I honestly can't see the point of a Rav4. The whole point of a car like this is that it should;
    (a) have loads of rear leg room and boot space. The Rav has neither. In fact it's boot is tiny compared to it rivals and rear leg room is poor.
    (b) 4wd is desirable. They look stupid in the snow/ice helplessly spinning their 2 front wheels.

    Also interior very basic and not that nice to drive. There are better options out there for the money eg Santa Fe.. If your heart is set on Toyota buy a Corolla/Avensis.

    massively flawed vehicles. cheap to buy expensive to fix, and you will be fixing it a lot.

    The dmf seems to go more often on the rav, I'm guessing the drivetrain is under more pressure as there's no real wheelspin so in situations in the verso where you'd get wheelspin, you'd just keep pushing in the rav. Add in towing ( there was a €7k premium for the diesel back then so you'd usually have a reason) and It's understandable

    I would have thought that Hyundai's reliability was up there on a par with Toyota esp the newer Santa Fes. Are you saying they are flawed purely on reliability or is there some other reason?

    JD Power has the 2007 model about even for reliability;

    My mother has the 2 litre petrol 4wd.

    Its VERY nippy.

    Was not that great in our recent snow, mainly because of the tyres.

    One big issue imo is the angle of the accelerator pedal.

    It seems very steep to me, and I find it extremely uncomfortable to drive on any type of long distance. It was so bad I asked Toyota if it could be adjusted - they said no.

    My mother has gotten used to it. I am 6"1, and maybe thats the reason, but I just cant drive it comfortably.

    Other than that its been very good.

    Just take it on a relatively long test drive to make sure it doesn't bother you. If it was my car, I would just have to get rid of it.

    i was going on the fact that they sid they we're after a circa 06 model, which would still have been the mk1 santa fe. i still wouldn't say the mk2 is amazing, but its streaks ahead of the mk1. (speaking relaibility wise)

    Ross O Carrol Kelly's ex-wife, Saoirse drives a Rav4 - that's pretty much all you need to know.
