Anybody suffer from ADD?

I have suspected for a long time that I have ADD. All throughout school I found it incredibly difficult to focus on studies. I would often complete half of my homework and then leave it, and I would only study for a very brief amount of time, just around the exams. In college I now have a similar if not worse problem, often leaving assignments altogether. My grades are generally terrible, but I don't have trouble grasping concepts when I do muster the required attention to read or listen. People whom I would expect to achieve worse grades than me, based on their ability to understand topics in class, invariably surpass me in exams and assignments.

All throughout school I believed myself to be stupid for this reason, and it wasn't until I was forced through fear of punishment that I managed to achieve good grades, but these were never repeated reliably. I genuinely believe that I am not as bad a student as my usual grades would indicate. I never manage to cover the amount of material required to gain sufficient knowledge of my subjects to get As or Bs. Even in a non academic setting my ability to pay attention is bad: watching films and tv programmes my mind wanders, and I often get up and leave halfway through, only to return and to watch something else for five minutes. I have a great deal of difficulty reading papers or books, as I constantly lose attention.

I am not seeking a diagnosis hear, I am just wondering if others have been diagnosed with ADD, and if so, what did they do to about it. I believe that I am a reasonably intelligent person being held back by an inability to concentrate and apply myself. I realise that it could be due to other factors, but I wish to at least explore the possibility that there is an issue like ADD at play.

    Hi there,

If you wish to explore the possibility that there is an issue like ADD at play then first of all you require a medical professional to diagnose you. There is no point discussing with people who have had a diagnosis what their own medical professional suggested in terms of treatment unless you know that is what is affecting you.

If you are worried about your concentration or ability to focus, make an appointment with your GP, don't diagnose yourself and self prescribe from internet advice.

    All the best

    Ickle
