I wondered if anyone had any experience of purchasing their own credit card POS teminals rather than renting one from their bank, if so what are the issues, where/how can they be programmed, best place to purchase etc. Any other advice appreciated

The best advise is to contact your ePOS company as they may have a built in credit card option. This way you just purchase the PED from them.

I assume you already have a merchant number, if not then your ePOS company will guide you through this process.

Please PM me for further advise

Here's a unique new way of accepting credit cards. Comes from Jack Dorsey of Twitter fame. Rates are pricey but you can't say it ain't innovative.

I have seen this before and I like the idea, but is it not just for turning your iphone/ipod into a credit card terminal?

This is only possible for certain retail markets.

What retail market are you in?

I dont like the swipe used by squareup! if going this line i would do a google search for the type that are used in the apple stores, they provide more protection for the iphone/ipod have the swipe at the back and come with a barcode scanner.

Im sorry i dont know the company that makes them but I am aware that it isnt apple its another company who will sell them to anyone

If a card has a chip, the authorising bank won't let it be swiped, so no good in this country.

Correct me if i'm wrong but there is a swipe fall back on all cards. you can force it to go into this fall back mode by inserting the card the wrong way around 3 times, if they are willing to allow this fall back then they will allow swiped cards to be authorised.

So how are you going to deal with the chargebacks?

i have already said this can only be used in certain retail markets.

this wasnt my idea i was simply agreeing that it was a nice idea as you can see from my earlier threads i have recemended that R3al contacts the ePOS company that they use to see if they can provide them with an option.

In my last response i was just pointing out that swipe will work sometimes

Well I've not tried it specifically by doing that, but I've had a few customers in with faulty chips, which couldn't be swiped. Luckily they are good customers of mine, so I was comfortable putting through a 'Customer Not Present' transaction, but that's neither here nor there.

Either way, the point being that the Square Up device wont work here. Seems a good idea in theory though.
