Fitting TRV's to Gun Barrel pipes - Help

    Hi all

My parents' house has a old trusty system with gun barrel pipework but have a single stat in the hallway and no TRV's anywhere. I feel it's worth replacing the old valves with TRV's but is the gun barrel 3/4" or .... ?

Basically, what sort of fittings would I need ?

It's hard work changing gun barrel radiator valves ,it's very easy to damage connections under the floor.

It's also hard to get trv's to match existing radiator valves ,they have different clearances.

Basically don't do it unless you're use to doing it.

If it plumbed in GB then it must be 40 to 50 yrs old. A better option would be to replace all pipework with insulated Copper and then fit the new Trv valves at the same time. You can do as you propose but it is not an easy task. Old Gb pipework has a nasty habit of ringing off when you try to loosen it. Even if you are just changing the trvs you will have to raise the rads as by the time you fit a new fitting onto the pipework and then the Trv you will find that the rad is hitting the Trv and will need to be raised.

Spot on Sky6 with the years. I remember now that it was installed when I'm sure I was only about 4 years old so that was just over 40 years ago !!

For the sake of the few 10's of Euro extra for heating per year (and even if it's 100 or 2), I'll abandon the TRV idea. The whole system works well and if it ain't broke, then I won't fix it !!

    Many thanks

I wouldn't desturb GB. As earlier threads stated you could easily damage existing pipework and you may need to change the stubs on your radiator.

Also the system may have small bits of debris from the GB floating around... this could foul up the TRV seat/ needle.

Give the system and rads a flush/ clean out when weather gets better. This may improve the circulation in the system. Rebalance rads to get heat where you most need it.
