    Hi all,

I'm not expert when it comes to cars ... infact I know little to nothing :D
I have an issue where the engine light on my 02 VW Golf will not turn off.

I've have the car serviced and regularly check for Oil etc.
VW Dealer also looked at the car and nobody can seem to get this light to stay off.

Is there anything that I can do with a laptop and a data cable to fix this?
    If so , what do I need ? ;)

Unscrew the bulb in the dash or cut the wire to the bulb :D

Is there a particular reason that this would stay on if there was nothing mechanically wrong with the car?

did the dealer give you any explanation or try any repair?

it would be most bizarre that they couldn't diagnose it

See they got it to turn off (I didn't bring it to the dealer myself, I got my brother too while I was working) but it came on again a day later.

How does the car perform , Theres no end of problems that could be a factor . Id be fairly sure any garage worth their salt should be able to diagnose the problem .

Just a couple of possible causes

Engine misfire / lamba sensors / vacum leaks air intake system /
Timing belt worn could be picking up crank position fault . Car may run ok but light will continue to come on

The simple reason it keeps coming back on is because whatever issue the car has hasn't been fixed or properly diagnosed yet.

My fathers Mk4 1.4 golf has 250,000 miles + and the engine light only came on once for the EGR valve, I cleared it and it came back a while later and I cleared it again and low and behold it came back. So I put in a new EGR valve and its not back since. But you could have a different problem you will have to get it hooked up to a computer.

oh, this mightn't be of any help, but, ah , if you disconnect the battery for a few mins and connect again it'll reset the computer thingy and the light'll go off but more than likely come back on in a while(day or two) ,possibly what the garage did:D I know that light came on in my brothers 1.4 bora before and it kept 'conking', replaced the coil-fixed the conking but not the light
replaced some sensor thing in the exhaust for E250- that sorted it.
Best of luck with it, hopes its somethin small;)

didnt think the 1.4 golf engine was capable of mileage anything like that

I would go so far as to say I don't believe that vag 1.4 16v engine could possibly have done that mileage with no issues other then an egr valve! The list of common problems with those engines could fill a book! Sure some a wearing out valves guides before 100k
