Engine damage from frost

Went to look at a digger for a friend yesterday which has been idle for the last few month or more,
Started it and all the engine oil fell onto the floor.
The engine oil cooler-filter housing split in half.

No anti-freeze in the engine so its his own fault.

My question is when its fixed and full of anti-freeze while it be OK or should i leave the block and rad drained? in case we get more bad weather.

should be fine if it was turned off quick.

put a fresh mix of coolant in, 50% water (demineralised if possible) and 50% antifreeze/coolant. That should protect it to -30c

    Cheers macnab,

Just hope its the only point thats leaking but will know soon enough when i get it back on the button.

    Another question,
Why would the frost plugs not have give way?
    Is this not there purpose?

I would still do a compression test on it before I'd buy it just to be sure.:)

It all depends were the water freeze's first as to were it breaks out, This is one I had the engine would still run and as it was under the intake manifold I only found it by doing a compression test.
