Laptop whirring noise

    Hi guys
I have a HP laptop. It is 15 months old and the battery died a few weeks back.
This morning, it has started making a whirring noise, the noise is coming from the left. It whirrs for maybe 5 seconds, then stops, then starts again.
The laptop has fallen off the bed a couple of times and was always fine, however it happened again the other night (fell asleep and it fell) so am wondering is this a cause. Although if it was I would expect the laptop to start whirring straight away as opposed to a couple of days later...

Anyone know any fixes for this? I am a heavy laptop user (use it maybe 7 hours a day) so maybe I just burnt it out?

Yeah, it sounds like its fall damage, skipper. If its an HP Pavillion, well I just took mine apart the other day :)

    Familiar? Ish? (I was dusting)

Yours is newer but if its anyway the same design, all the juicy parts, like your hard drive and the CPU fan, they're all on the left. So it's probably one of those 2. Hard Drives will spin up and spin down the same way a CD drive will, they just do it up to 5400 to 7200rpms. It sounds like it could be the hard drive, unless you feel for some reason that its the fan but the two can sound familiar when either is starting to fail. All the same, I would back up your data now and then worry about troubleshooting the problem. It could just be the CPU fan but assume the worst.
