    Hi Folks,
Quick question regarding getting the best sound out of the PS3.

I have my PS3 connected to the following package using hte HDMI cable.
    http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B003H9NHXS/ref=oss_product

I was wondering, will I get better sound if I connect the sound via Optical output.

    Thanks in advance.

    P.

HDMI carries better sound than optical

Isn´t HDMI both better and cheaper? Don´t see why you would choose something else then

wrong, optical cable is the most efficient method of carrying sound. fibre optics are the way 2 go

    the difference isn't really quality..

Arguably optical has a better chance of less loss in terms of a signal over copper wire. However, cheap optical cables are susceptible to micro-fractures and thus loss...
Anyway - it's all digital on both connections.

The BIG thing though is that you won't get anything more than 5.1 (maybe 6.1) from your optical out on the PS3.
However, HDMI can carry 7.1 ok.

    To the OP
Since the receiver is 5.1 it really doesn't matter. You won't get the benefit that HDMI can bring as the receiver can't deal with it anyway :)

Also - the previous version of that receiver couldn't porcess the audio over HDMI - i.e. convert it. So if you run into issues with no sound from your PS3 on certain titles, etc. Just check that your sending the correct audio format to it. Might be fixed in newer versions though....
