What exactly is a family-type hotel? (sorry...I don't have any kids of my own so don't know what the difference is)

Fair point Ponster. As you may be aware hotel rooms in central Paris are so small that most don't offer availability for child over 2 in same room. Hence family = hotel with suitable accommodation.

Sorry the only advice I can give is to avoid the above & their apartments at St. Martin. We stayed at their hotel which consists of apartments in Paris. It was supposed to be family friendly but this wasn't strictly true. There was a down & out who used to sleep with a big dog at one end of the lane way in & there is an unemployment centre at the other. The only way to control the temperature in the room is to open the window so you could be woken quite early by people waiting for the centre to open or in our case during the night by people having a drink outside so they could smoke. They weren't loud but unfortunately the noise really carried.

Errr, because I'm the mod of this forum who happens to live in Paris and was interested in what a "family-type" hotel was. If as mod of Travel I didn't understand the request then I thought that others would also not understand and asked for Btr to clarify what they wanted to find out.

I thought it meant for example a hotel which provide a babysitter so the adults can eat out in the evenings without taking the kids along.

The Campanile or Tim hotels chains are pretty reliable in my experience. I like the site Venere to look for something, people's comments give a good overall opinion on hotels. I'm on look out for one myself, not necessarily family, but reasonable and well situated, will let you know if I see anything interesting.

edit : if you've an idea of a preferred location people might be able to offer more specific help

    Hi.
So, if I get it, you need a triple room, in a central area?
I advise you the hotel Quai Voltaire, located in the 7th arrondissement. It's rather central, and close to the Voltaire Bank! It's a beautiful area. The rooms are lovely, and the staff is very service-minded. http://www.quaivoltaire.fr/
and I can suggest you a hotel located right in St-Germain area, it's the hotel Moderne St-Germain. They have triple room :). In this hotel I particularly like the breakfast room. The atmosphere is almost futuristic, with their pretty white chairs, and the changing colors light :D. And, the staff is very friendly. Once we needed advices about what restaurant to choose, so they recommended us a few delighful restaurants. http://www.hotel-paris-stgermain.com/ .
Hoping you will find what you are looking for!

The hotel Meslay, Republique the hotel has very good customer reviews on TA, the area is very nice and good for families!

Edit: If you need something more "center" you should look at the hotels Crystal in Saint Germain or Chaplain R.G here's some moar reading material:

Baby cots are usually provided free for kids under 2 years, and they are not charged as a person. If you stay with bigger kids it is often difficult to find triple or quadruple rooms. Hotels are not allowed to take 5 or more people in one room, but some hostels might have bigger family rooms.
The cheapest family rooms I know are of Hotel de France:

They have both triples and doubles. The hotel is simple but decent, located between Gare de Lyon and Bastille. The location is especially convenient if you want to visit both Paris and Disneyland.
