HI All . Trying to establish whats the average usage of kerosene during this cold weather so far . I am minding the little one this morning so have to still work it out myself but will be interesting to know what others also used..

Also seams that with the financial times we are in a lot of people are choosing to do small fills of kerosene instead of paying for big fills. And other reasons also being that people dont want to much kerosene in the tanks due to the stealing of kerosene out of domestic tanks

There is so many variables in this its crazy. Its like asking for a length of a pce of string.

You establish usuage by patterns. Your own generally. However many people will tell you that a 500 euro fill will last them from oct - March. Its impossible to say that this year. Most peoples heating has been on 18 hours a day if not more.

Buy an oil watchman. It allows you order before you run out..

it doesnt matter what the variables are we all experienced the same weather . ANd at the end of the day it cost money .

From the 27th November to today as I just measured my tank I used 410 l.

That includes running my boiler nonstop from the 20 to the 26thDEC on 40c and turning it up for a hour at night to 55/60 and then back to 40cduring that cold spell. Every other day during the cold weather the boiler was at 55/60 going on and off when set to do so

Yes I know that if your house has super insulation or just a small bit more than required you will use less oil . But it is still interesting to see what is the usage .

My house has very poor insulation and will have to deal with that when money is available so that should mean less kero consumption

You're normally better off getting 1000L filled, it works out cheaper per litre.

It's very hard to gauge "average usage" this year as the vast majority of people's boilers will have been running overtime due to the extreme cold.

My parents got a fill of 1000L of Kerosene in early November and there's about two thirds of the tank remaining which is heavier usage than normal - they don't run their boiler anywhere near the amount of hours some others do though. The house is pretty well insulated and generally there's no-one in the house during the day as everyone is at work/college so the boiler is off. They also never leave the boiler run overnight.

    HI Kensignton.

Thanx for that . Ye it just more for interest sake what the trend of ussage is during this extremely coldspell that we had . I know that the average usage is out the door to normal winters . I have been recording my oil usage since may/june 2008 . Since that time I also made some improvements to the way my boiler works re motorised valves for zoning etc .

We are home most of the time as we work from home and have a baby etc so the boiler will be on for a good amount of time at the day and night .

Insulation factors also make a big difference that I have identified and still need to address this as its my major negative factor re oil usage .

I used 200 litres in 2 weeks over the cold spell. Had the heat on for about 10 hours out of 24, and house never got above 15 degrees. Crazy money, now living at 12 degrees cos oil ran out :(

Sorry that you ran out of oil . Its ########x~#S&@#£;$

Hi Planet X. Thanx for the responce . Thats what I am looking for real people like me with the same problems and thanx to other contributors so far kensington et al .:)

ye my house is a dormer bungalow . And the biggest issue is upstairs re insulation for roof attic space as the house is 14/16 yrs old .

Downstairs was fine as I have a solid fuel stove in my lounge that heats a big part of the bottom of the house . Apart from where my hall is if the front door was up to spec it would make a big diffrence also . Below I got my lounge joining kitchen to normally 21.9 --23c. The rads in there are on trv's which i plan to do to the rest of the house for nxt winter . Hall was always 16-18.9 but the door to the hall was always closed to trap heat from fire so the temperature use to fluctuate. But at bed time we left this door open. The solid fuel stove ran nonstop for more than a week and use to bank it up at night and still going in the mornings with a small top up

Landing and bedrooms were 12.5 once but use to average 14 --16.8 during the days when it was -7 and never got higher than -3 in the day outside . Then it went to 17 & 19 when it got to -2 or +2. During the coldest spell the boiler was on 24/hrs per day for 6days at 40c . At the coldest when the boiler was on constantly upstairs was 15c

I know some people say wow why so much spend on insulation just think how much oil you can buy for that . I think with the oil price ever increasing soon you wont get much oil for a few thousand. Well I still have to make the big spend re insulation but will do ASAP I can afford
