    Hi Everybody,

does anybody have the tom tom gps app for the iphone?

i am thinking of getting the ireland and england app but have a few questions:

    how do you find it?
    are the maps accurate?
    are maps updateable?
    is it user friendly?

    thanks,
    bop.

Using this at the moment. Can't fault it really as it's free. ;)

Used TomTom to get me to Dublin during the week to collect an item.
I haven't been in Dublin in about 20 years (not counting the airport) and I just simply typed in yer man's address and TomTom took me directly to his door.
Really can't fault it except for the pricing and the cost of the gps cradle which is absolutely ridiculous at €99.
You really need it for the iphone though as the gps chip itself in it is a bit weak and you constantly getting annoying buzzer sounds from the app about weak signal.
For the price of the app+cradle you can basically buy yourself a proper satnav kit with better gps capabilities.

NavFree is excellent. Address search isn't the best but the few cent to do a in-app Google search it's worth it.

You'd be mad to pay for TomTom in my opinion.

I personally find NavFree rubbish. It doesn't recognise most of the roads in my area (including the one i live on) and I live in a town. You can't point out a location on a map and tell it to "go here" for this reason.

And it asks you to enter a "city name" to go to, you enter somewhere you want to go and it doesn't recognise it in the search.

    Crap app imo.

Well thats what you pay for with TomTom. However if use the google search in NavFree it reads the Lat / Long of the location, and works flawlessly. I've yet to have a problem with it. I agree the address search isn't great (They have updated it recently) But I'd rather pay a few cents to use Google search than pay TomTom €70.

I find the TomTom app excellent. (BTW the Western Europe version is only a few cents more, yet gives EU and UK/IRL coverage - might be worth it if you travel abroad at all).

The google search is great, especially as we have no postcodes, makes entering a destination a breeze. Is it pricey? Yes. But being attached to the always-on internet connection of the iPhone makes it much more useful than any standalone sat-nav.

I was wondering this, I will defo get the WE one so. I really don't want to pay €70 for Tom Tom, but if you get WE and UK/IRL then it's not so bad... Still a lot of money though.

Can't even find a way to enter the LAT/LONG into NavFree!

Your right on that. Fairly trivial to implement I suppose. However is it worth paying €70 for? I don't think so.

don't want to encourage pirated apps but jailbreak your phone and get tomtom for free.

I agree with you, €70 is too much! Mad price. The western Europe one could be considered more reasonable if it includes UK and IRL for a similar price though. Still a huge sum.

I navigated my way through Spain this year using the tomtom app and found it excellent. I hadnt even the 3g or data turned on. It worked solely from the downloaded maps and gps. The only thing i did find with it was the volume was a bit low when not in the cradle. All in all an excellent app i liked it so much i actually bought it when i got home.

Depends how you consider it. What would that sort of money buy you in the way of a TomTom GPS unit, which is effectively what you are getting with the TomTom app.

Tom tom is excellent, expensive but it includes all the updated maps going forward.

They are €40 per year with standalone tomtom hardware.

Using an iPhone 4 never lost GPS coverage.

    It really is that good

I had three garmin sat nav's over the years before i got tom tom on the iphone 4 and i find the iphone better

The maps are accurate and it now even has map share
It never seem to loose coverage

Sometimes you do have to pay for quality

Can anyone verify that it's worth buying, even if one forgoes buying the cradle too?

It's brilliant app it's made my real sat nav useless as the iPhone version as near completely up to date maps (SE ire has alot of new roads)
Also I find the google search thing is terrific the sat nav will find and bring you literally anywhere even if it's not in the actual app it'll find it via google
Only downfall is that the gps thinks I'm 200 metres to the right of the main road sometimes until I reset
    Worth buying IMO

Just updated to the latest version, with MapShare. I would assume this updates things like the new Motorway from Dublin to Cork & Limerick. The replacement of the red cow roundabout with an interchange, etc?

Also as a point, if you buy this app and have more than one iOS device you can have it on those devices too. For example I have the app on my personal iP4, my work supplied 3Gs and my own iPad. As I set up my Dad's iPhone it is also on there. So thats 4 GPS systems.

This is the reason I see the Tomtom app as good value and why I plan to get it soon. I'd rather pay a one off charge now than getting hit every time new map updates are released for a stand alone sat nav system.

I can't speak for Tom Tom, but the Navigon App worked just fine for me without the cradle. I did get the Tom Tom cradle during the Black Friday sale, but I got it more as a handy car kit rather than as a necessary accessary to use the app. From what I had read prior to buying Navigon back in July, it and the Tom Tom are fairly equal, so I assume the Tom Tom will work well without the cradle as well. (I got the Navigon because I prefer NavTeq maps to the Tele Atlas ones).

in the interests of fairness, the rating in the app store say that tomtom is also unable to input coordinates! which is another big + for navfree.

that's probably for older versions...I think since 1.4 they've had that feature..I'm on 1.6 and it definitely has it.

also...garmin has just released an app for the iphone...to me garmin are miles ahead of tomtom on satnav...excellent maps etc

edit: crap it's cloud based at the moment which means you need an active 3g connection and only supports US/Canada...hopefully they'll release a full local based app for europe

Navigon also use the same Navteq maps that Garmin use. That was why I went with them, I was happy with the maps my old Garmin had, and since they didn't do an App, I chose Navigon for the maps. Excellent decision if I do say so myself! :D
Although, if anyone is thinking of getting Navigon, wait for a sale (if they're not currently having one), they come around quite regularly from what I've seen.

MapShare is a great idea, I was able to (finally) input the correct name for the lane I live on!

Until some not so smart people find out how to use it, that is... There is now a "Part of Castlebridge" in Wexford
