They're probably equally as likely to break down too.

bmw better car, 1.4 golf suffers from oil leeks but both good cars also i found the golf to be painfully slow

thats the standard 1.4 i golf you would be better off with a 1.9sdi or tdi or gt tdi lot more economical and far better reliability

Hah! A Hyundai is FAR more reliable then a friggin' Golf. And a BMW is nowhere near as reliable as a Lexus, excluding the truly awful IS200.

not much choice then buddy most them mercs audi an bmw are expensive to run and buy parts if ya wanna go round in the flashy car it comes at a price :D if i had 6 grand for a car id buy somthing im not gunna be sick of putting petrol in 3 month down the line then go on to sell it for a fraction of what you paid. if you want reliability and good economy go for one of the smaller diesel cars

2 litre diesel BMWs are pigs to drive.

The Golf would be a lot sportier.

The only diesel BMW's worth owning are the 335d or 535d. The rest are just cars for the missus to do the shopping in.

indeed a 163bhp rear wheel drive is a pig compared to a 75bhp front wheel drive. Which of course is very 'sporty'.

Its more fun to drive than a 2 litre diesel from BMW - thats from personal experience.

I loved my 330i BMW, but I wouldn't be seen dead driving a 2 litre diesel - talk about embarrassing. A boy racer in a Glanza is less of a wannabee.

The 04 diesel had only 148 hp when new, not 163.

7 years on, you would be lucky to be getting 120 hp out if it - a pig.

A 75bhp Golf would not be described as sporty

I don't want a boy racer car, I want a classy car for business

How much would a 2 liter diesel cost a week to run if I put 25 euro's in??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 86 ✭✭Final Approach

Ive owned both cars. I previously drove a 2001 MK IV VW Golf Comfortline for 3 years before upgrading to an E46 2004 BMW 320d M-Sport which I am driving currently.

    My answers to both your questions would be as follows;

Firstly, I feel that there certainly isnt much difference between fuel costs between both cars, but of course if you are driving long distances on a regular basis, then you will get more miles for your money with the 320d. Aside from fuel costs, you also need to consider the increased road tax on the BMW compared to the VW. There is a significant increase.

Secondly, In my opinion there is absolutely no comparision between the BMW and the Golf in terms of drivability. The BMW wins hands down. Even though mine is now almost 7 years old, there is still plently of power available when needed. It is comfortable, agile, and responsive, which are three things I certainly cannot say about the Golf. Having said that, mine does have sports suspension and sports seats, so I would def recommend that you look at an M-Sport if your considering a 320d. The 1.4 Golf was an absolute dead duck, with no acceleration whatsoever. Dont get me wrong, its a solid car, but I think the body is just too heavy for a 1.4 Ltr engine. Perhaps the 1.6 version is better.

    Hope this helps.

comparing a 1.4 golf to a 320d is like comparing the titanic to concord. both on acceleration/speed and handling/cornering.

If you are looking at those two don't forget to consider a Kia Picanto or an old S-Class.
