Advice needed in Bundoran

    Hi all,

Apologies to regular posters as i'm sure that all the information i require is available on this forum but I have kids and an adult dragging out of me while am trying to sort this. I bought a Freeview Tv in Currys (Enniskillen) today and am trying to get the Saorview channels tuned in. Make and model of the set is an LG M2280 with mpeg4 and freeview hd capabilities (http://www.lg.com/ie/tv-audio-video/televisions/LG-lcd-tv-22LD320.jsp)

Just wondering am I missing something here? Do I need anything further to be able to tune these in?

I've tried autotuning and all i get is the 4 Irish. I've tried manual tuning and i've picked up a few of the Uk channels but poor reception. The TV has a UHF and VHF aerial plugged into the back through a splitter. Anyone any ideas?

Thanks in advance and my apologies for the shortness of the post. Think carefully before ye have kids.

did you buy an LG 22LD350 or an LG M228D?

Sounds like you are picking up analogue only, do you now what transmitter you are getting your signals from ?

When you tried auto/manual tuning did you select DTV ?

I'm assuming you are getting your Saorview signal for Truskmore in which case the try doing the manual DTV scan on channel 53 . See the "Manual Program Tuning (In Digital Mode)" section page 70 of the user manual.

If you purchased the LG M228D you can see it is described as a TV/Monitor. Im 95% certain LG tvs described also as monitors are MPEG 2 only :( . The LG 22LD320 is MPEG 4 and should be more than able to pick up RTE digital tranmission from truskmore.

The M2280D is MPEG4. Its an LCD TV/Monitor with media player facilities via USB. It is fine for Saorview.

Take out the splitter and try the UHF aerial directly and follow jobyrnes instructions.

There was a thread a few weeks back from a guy in Bundoran who was picking up Truskmore Saorview on his sat. downlead, so signal strength shouldn't be an issue (excluding any specific obstructions etc.).

If anything, too much signal could be more of a problem.

I experienced a problem with LG t.v/monitors having just the Mpeg2 compression before so I was wary to this.

Thanks so much for everyone's help so far.

Sorry for the confusion about the model. It is a LG M228D with MPEG4 but I couldnt find that exact model on the LG site (more haste less speed as it were).

I followed the advice given, took the splitter out and followed jobyrne's lead and picked up 7 channels on 53 though the signal is poor.

Were I to change the direction of the outside aerial would this help? Also, the mother in law is about 10km from the North, would I be able to pick up the UK channels too if i were to re-position the Aerial?

Thanks again for the help people, my brownie points are accumulating...

UK is likely Brougher to the NE of you, Truskmore is SE, you need two aerials.

Thanks for that Spongebob. Should a UHF indoor aerial be good enough to pick up the signal from truskmore? I'm not sure about the outdoor one as its ancient and it#s been moved quite a few times I think.

I'd say so for Truskmore, Brougher is on quite low power now and will be upped in 2 years which means that you could be overwhelmed with signal from there at that time if you put an amp in for Brougher today.

I get 90% signal quality from truskmore with this, just outside sligo town.

So a cheap Bargain store aerial would be as good or better. (From €2)

That's cheap for Argos because it's even more basic than the Snake oil "one For alls". It's rubbish aerial. A 6" of wire or stripping back outer of end of coax cable by 6" / 15cm will work as well.

    see http://www.techtir.ie/radio-tv/uhf-aerials

Signal levels vary over 1000 to 1 versus location. In good locations almost any aerial works. Such as a small screwdriver sitting in the aerial socket.

Brougher is almost due east from Bundoran (slightly south of east if anything).

Truskmore is almost due south from Bundoran (slightly west of south).

As said, Truskmore should be easy, I've seen the channels come in with just an RF cable stuck in the back and looped over the top of the TV.

I've seen all Brougher muxes got with an unamplified 54-element group A (IIRC) Yagi outside.

With an amplified grid aerial in the attic space, it only gets (barely) muxes B and C. When UK Freeview goes to full power, I expect all muxes will be attainable on that aerial.

UK analogue telly in Bundoran will be either from Brougher Mountain or the Gortnalee relay between Bellek & Garrison in Fermanagh. From my observations the last time in the town, its about half and half in terms of where people get reception from.

Interestingly, at DSO Gortnalee is planned to be co-channel for the PSB multiplexes with Brougher.
