New Laptop - worth upgrading it to Windows 7 Ultimate?

    Hey,

    Have this new laptop on the way: http://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/Lenovo_IdeaPad_Z560_988428.html

    Comes with Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit but I have access to any version of Windows I want through college.... would it be worth upgrading to Ultimate when it arrives? Would there be an increase in performance or would it just be carrying extra features that I would't use.

    Looking into it myself now too but thought I might check any advice floating around here too!

    Thanks!

    Ultimate really only contains a few new features that might be useful to you, though most likely you'll be able to get away without having them. Windows itself will not perform better with Ultimate than Home Premium.

    If you're in college, you might find Windows XP Mode useful if you come across something that requires XP or can't run properly in 7.

    There's a feature comparison on the Microsoft website that might help:

    Nice laptop by the way. Hope you have fun with it. :D

    Might just be worth it not to have non of the OEM preinstalled crap like nortan/macaffe on it. Reinstall it with to have a clean slate

    Thanks for the replies! XP mode is something I would want, as Home Premium is missing that I'll go for the upgrade.

    On a side note - if I don't register the copy of Home Premium that comes with the laptop... and assuming it comes with the Windows DVD.... can I sell this??

    If it is only XP mode you want you can probably get XP from college and duel boot.

    NO WAY !

    RTFM , it's not your software. Microsoft still own it. Even if you were to buy a retail upgrade package and applied that to it then the original license would die and the upgrade would be locked to the machine forever.

    Microsoft are raking in over a billion dollars a month, they don't do that by leaving loopholes in the licenses.

    Really? :confused: ... something doesn't seem right about that...

    I'm assuming when I turn on the laptop first it'll want me to register the copy of Windows 7. If I don't do this, and just installs W7 Pro from the start then surely the original W7 Home Premium is unregistered and Microsoft don't have an associated machine for it yet?

    The version I'd replace it with would be a full copy, not an upgrade btw.

    Is it just a technical agreement thing in the terms or would the licence have been pre-registered to some extent to the laptop, rendering it useless on a different machine....?

    The license of Win7 Home Premium is for that laptop make and model only. It is an OEM license. It will only for work someone else with the same laptop. In order to pass this licence to someone you will have to create an Win7 installation based on the OEM files on your laptop, most likely in secondary hidden partition. Google will give you these instructions. Even them the setup program may check the BIOS to ensure that the make and model matches what the installation expects.

    And I would follow advice already given and wipe the hard disk and do a clean install of Win7 Ultimate.

    I was considering buying the Lenovo but was advised by the Harvey Norman guy that the specs are pretty poor on it and he didnt recommend it at all.
    Upgrading to a higher version of the OS may give you probs.

    There is no confusion

    you MUST accept the terms of the license to legally use the software

    it's still license violation even if you don't get caught.

    The only way to transfer the license is to transfer the laptop.

    may use the software only as expressly permitted in this agreement. In doing so, you must comply with any technical
    limitations in the software that only allow you to use it in certain ways. For more information, see
    www.microsoft.com/licensing/userights. You may not
    • work around any technical limitations in the software;
    • reverse engineer, decompile or disassemble the software, except and only to the extent that applicable law
    expressly permits, despite this limitation;
    • make more copies of the software than specified in this agreement or allowed by applicable law, despite this
    limitation;
    • publish the software for others to copy;
    • rent, lease or lend the software; or
    • use the software for commercial software hosting services.
    Rights to access the server software do not give you any right to implement Microsoft patents or other Microsoft

    18. NOT FOR RESALE SOFTWARE. You may not sell software marked as “NFR” or “Not for Resale.”
    19. ACADEMIC EDITION SOFTWARE. You must be a “Qualified Educational User” to use software marked as “Academic
    Edition” or “AE.” If you do not know whether you are a Qualified Educational User, visit www.microsoft.com/education
    or contact the Microsoft affiliate serving your country.
    21. TRANSFER TO A THIRD PARTY. The first user of the software may transfer it, and this agreement, directly to a third
    party. Before the transfer, that party must agree that this agreement applies to the transfer and use of the software.
    The first user must uninstall the software before transferring it separately from the device. The first user may not retain
    any copies. [would still be restricted by parts 18 and 19]

    When your third level institute enters these agreements, they spend *a lot* of money doing so, and maintaining the subscriptions. In theory, If they discovered you and a bunch of other students selling keys, the college would probably be fined heavily right before having its access expunged. I'd say they'd delight in expelling you if that happened.

    tl;dr - don't try selling them.

    OK OK I was just asking! :p

    Wasn't aware of "OEM licence", was working on assumption that it would be normal licence but makes sense that the manufacturer would get a bulk discount.

    I was considering buying the Lenovo but was advised by the Harvey Norman guy that the specs are pretty poor on it and he didnt recommend it at all.
    Upgrading to a higher version of the OS may give you probs.

    The same Lenovo that I linked? That'll have no problem running Windows 7! I'm already running it on a much older and poorer spec'd machine. I think you've been talking to a dodgy salesman that was looking for more commission... ask him "how many LRFs does that come with? It's very important for the system's stability". Overheal those links are relating to the MSDNAA copy, I was asking about selling the copy that comes with the laptop... which I now know is an OEM license.
    There is no confusion

    you MUST accept the terms of the license to legally use the software
    it's still license violation even if you don't get caught.

    The only way to transfer the license is to transfer the laptop.
    Hey Capt'n Midnight... I'm not intending to violate the license. Only asking what the situation was! ;) Up to speed on the "OEM license" issue now!

    Out of interest, if this was a non-OEM license would it be ok to sell? Or is the selling of any Windows 7 licences not allowed... only asking as I see a few on adverts...

    WIn7 is much more resource efficient. Even more so than XP. The laptop has 4 GB which is more than enough to run any version of Win7.

    ah :o

    this:

    16. TRANSFER TO A THIRD PARTY. You may transfer the software directly to a third party only with the licensed computer. The transfer must include the software and the Certificate of Authenticity label. You may not keep any copies of the software or any earlier version. Before any permitted transfer, the other party must agree that this agreement applies to the transfer and use of the software.

    Arrived today!

    It didn't come with any CDs/DVDs at all. Lenovo don't send them apparently, they suggest you just create a recovery disc yourself.

    So did that then installed Windows 7 Professional 64bit. Had trouble getting wifi working but plugged into the connection and it downloaded the correct drivers. The text on screen was very fuzzy at places :( too until I noticed they'd installed a bog standard driver too, so downloaded the Geforce one and it's perfect now, much much better! :D

    Nice to have it cleaned of all the OEM software too, would recommend it to others in the same boat.

    I've one "Unknown Device" in Device Manager which is bugging me, haven't figured out yet what it is.

    Fingerprint scanner?

    Go into it's properties, the Details Tab and select hardware IDs from the dropdown list. Google those codes.

    Thanks! Went to check that but it's gone, seems to have sorted itself out. Did a restart after installing a load of drivers but the second restart seemed to sort it out. ;)
