most swedes have good english, didn't find sweden any more expensive for day to day stuff as a tourist no, its certainly cheaper than norway and yes there are loads of incredible looking women there :D

I didn't like Stockholm too much, much prefer Helsinki. You'll be able to get by with english in Stockholm right enough though.

Why not try Malta 28 Jan - 4 Feb 70Euro return.;)

always wanted to go to sweden. dont mind the cold.
only 20 euro for feck sake.
can laser cards be used in the atm's there?

I really liked Stockholm. They speak perfect english. I did find it expensive for drink but everything else was same as here. Airport is miles away from Stockholm also!

Not sure about laser but I am sure its fine if you can use abroad normally.

The Ryanair airport, Skavsta is miles away.

Arlanda airport is not far at all.

I visited Stockholm in January a few years ago. It was awesome. The city is beautiful especially the Gamla Stan and along with Edinburgh is the most picturesque in all of Europe. The women are all beautiful looking and everyone speaks perfect English. Alcohol is expensive but just stock up in the government owned off licence chain called Systembologat (spelling may be wrong) and it is cheap. Be careful the opening hours are limited especially at weekends so stock up as soon as you get there or you could be left stuck.

It gets dark at 3pm in January so get all your touristy stuff done early and then enjoy the city at night. Its beautiful.

    Things to do:

    - Ice Skating in the Kungstradgarden (spelling may be wrong)
    - Drink in the Absolut Ice Bar
    - Visit the Gamla Stan and the Kings Palace

All the bars have roulette tables aswell which is well weird.

City is beautiful. The people are indeed absurdly good looking, too, and in my experience strike a nice balance between being polite and being a good laugh. Stuff isn't nearly as expensive as you might expect, although drink is indeed more expensive than here. It's not really the kind of place you're going to get plastered anyway though, a few beers is just fine and won't break the bank.

Almost everybody speaks perfect English in Stockholm - with the addition of a slightly sexy accent to everything, too. If you head a little further afield it can get patchier but you'll still get by. The only thing I would say is that written Swedish bears absolutely no resemblance to any of the languages I'd be more familiar with, so menus etc proved a challenge.

I'd beg to differ on that one :P

Drink in your hostel beforehand and it wont be very expensive.

    Yes they can. :)

    Yes they can. :)

In addition to that, they can be used to pay just about anywhere, including kebab places and takeaways. We always used my credit card but two days ago, tried a Laser card just to see whether it works - yep, no problems.

It is rather bitterly cold right now (not for Swedes maybe, even though our friends here are also complaining about the unusual cold). The upside is that the city looks really beautiful covered in all that snow.

The airport bus is about €14 if prepaid online and takes 80 minutes from Skavsta airport to central Stockholm. There is a bus every half hour and you do not need to prebook a specific one.

I was looking at those prices since new years and I think a weekend break to Stockholm for around €20-€30 with the girlfriend would be class! I will wait till around March to go, never been there so im looking forward to it.:)

I'm going to Stockholm in September with my boyfriend for four nights. We're looking for cheap accomodation, preferably cheap hotel rather than hostel, any suggestions? Also what would the weather be like at that time of year?

Im going in July and got the Sheraton Stockholm for €111 a night and its a 5 star, right slap bang in the centre beside the train station. Hard to beat that! Its with www. hotelclub.com.

I was in Stockholm a few weeks ago, and stayed in a really nice hotel called the Columbus Hotel on Tjarhovsgatan, and it was 67 euros a nite including breakfast. It was pretty basic, but the staff were so nice, and it had a really fantastic breakfast included. It was on a side street off a busy street with lots of bars and cafes and shops.
I booked it through the roomex.com website

Thank you, both very helpful, I wish I could afford 111 a night cause 5 star sounds amazing. The best I'm finding is about 57 a night for a 3 star hotel, can anyone beat that?

I had bookmarked this thread but then forgot to reply to it for a while. In case you have not booked yet, here is another option: The Ibis Hägersten. We stayed there for New Year and paid €44 per night. It is a bit outside but very easily reachable by T-Bana.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8 twilight_2010

Nope, haven't booked yet, we're kinda waiting to see how much money we have. It's a balancing act between waiting too long and not having a good choice of deals or booking to early and we're in danger of not having enough. 44 pppn isn't bad alright, but we could stand to go a little cheaper (we're unemployed students)

We were unemployed students when we went in December as well. Sweden is not exactly paradise for those on a budget. I am paying the same for a monthly bus/tram ticket here in Turin, Italy as I paid for three days of bus/tram in Stockholm. Beware, Sweden is expensive.

In general, when traveling on a budget, you may enjoy CouchSurfing. I have surfed a lot of couches (and hosted a lot of people). You get free accommodation but even more importantly, you get to meet the locals and spend time with them.

I'm aware Sweden is expensive. We're saving though. See, he got a free flight and got to pick a city but they were all expensive cities so we picked the one we wanted cause none of them would have been overly cheap. We'll probably book in the next two weeks and for now, there are a few hotels that would be €300 or a little less for the whole four nights for both of us so that's decent enough. Any suggestions on nightlife, restaurants, attractions?
